Is $2,200 the uninsured cost?

$2,200.00 is my sons cost after insurance deductible and co-pay...actual cost is over $4,000.00

Wow. I’ll keep that in mind next time I deal with animals acting strange.

Agreed. Dogs kill critters. I doubt the owner even thought about rabies until after the dog passed away.

Wait, what? Rabies vaccination are required in Texas, which is where the OP's son is. I know it's quite popular these days to ignore laws that one doesn't feel like following, (examples galore), but come on guys.

Hound-Dog, I don't really see how you can say that you don't see how this was 'irresponsible,' UNLESS the owner knew the skunk was rabid, but in the very next sentence state. "It IS irresponsible, IMO, to not vaccinate your dog."

The whole thing was irresponsible, and illegal, once the dog hit 4 months of age and didn't get a simple vaccination.

I'm not a lawyer, but it seems like the jerk who owned the dog owes some people some money. Heck the health dpt is even involved tracking people down, so the documentation is there.

The way I see it, the only way the dog owner would not be responsible is if the dog got the vaccine within the last 2 years, but somehow it didn't "take." Unable to know if that's possible, but I recall my vet (my dog's vet actually) saying this can occur if the dog is sick when receiving the vaccine.

All we know for certain as of today is that the dog was not "current" on it's rabies vaccination and it is 100% certain that the dog contacted rabies and was put down. The health department is doing a good job of contacting people but chooses their wording carefully.

I had rabies shots some years ago due to being bit by a stray cat. Stray cat ended up belonging to careless neighbor. Found out later the cat had bitten other neighbors.....My cost after insurance was $1500 8 years ago. Hospital billed insurance company for $8000. I remember receiving a series of shots, and one was scheduled on XMAS eve at the hospital. I recall being there for about 4 hours that day because of staffing issues. I love animals, but the ones I don't know, are treated with caution. I hate to say this, but these issues are not the animal's fault. Many humans are stupid, and should be treated like they treat their pets.
