My BIL’s new fangled rain gauge shows 1.8” rainfall.
What kind of rain gauge can measure rainfall with such precision? Suddeningly having to rely on how much water is in an old wash pot seems so inadequate.

Most of the gauges I have are marked in tenths. Even the old ones.

Mine reads in 100ths as well.
Digital wireless, the indoor readout is sitting right by my recliner, right beside my indoor/outdoor thermometer/humidistat and my Atomic clock.
I don’t know how I made it this far without knowing exactly how much rain fell.

The Davis Vantage Pro weather station's gauge is a pair of cups hinged in the middle, at the bottom of a big funnel with a tiny hole (about 1/16") in the bottom. When a cup fills, it tips and registers .01" rain. Then the other cup is "up" and the thing just tips back and forth as the rain falls.
Note, the NWS will not accept citizen reports of rainfall from such a device, deemed as too inaccurate. You have to have one their approved gauges, such as the one linked by 95flhr.
When in doubt, mumble

If the old goats at Magoo’s Cafe’s table of knowledge didn’t have rain gauges that read in tenths, we wouldn’t have any topic other than politics and prescriptions to discuss at morning coffee. This message has been edited. Last edited by: arfmel,

I rely on my precise assessment of "it's been kinda dry" or its "been real wet". Close enough for me.

"Two fingers" is usually close enough for my purposes. When I get that big study grant from the feds, I'll upgrade to a dishpan and a ruler.

How accurate is this? I bought a wireless Lacrosse and it was terribly inaccurate, sometimes off by half or more compared to a standard type guage.

The bucket in the back of my truck had every 10th of that 1.8 inches in it this morning. I don’t know what made me start tracking the rain, but I have since the bucket somehow ended up in my truck bed.

Good enough for me. YMMV, especially if you are a real weather nut. I snap it open and clean the cups a couple times a year to make sure it isn't gunked up and watch for leaves / bugs in the funnel. You do have to replace the batteries, but they last a long time, year or more it seems.
The one I have is dead on with my old regular large gauge to the degree I can compare them. After about a year of comparison I took down the the old one post and all so I wouldn't have to mow around it.
