Got to make this quick. We came home after church and a few minutes later my son heard water dripping from the light on the 2nd floor onto our wood floor. Went in the attic and there are ice crystals all over the roof sheeting on the North and East wall. Since we are warming up from near zero to near freezing temps it is melting and dripping all over the insulation. A mitigation team is on their way to dry it out and do an inspection. Our house was built in 1999 so it’s pretty modern by code.

Word of warning, check your attic out!

My first thought as well. Or the piping from the vent has dislodged.

Do you have snow? Could be ice damming, ice frozen in gutter, at eave where it is colder, warm roof melts snow and water backs up and gets under shingles. Home insurance should cover that

I think I had a similar issue today.

We have a vaulted living room ceiling. In the ceiling are 2 recessed lights. Today, being the first day over freezing, resulted in a trickle of brown water coming out of one can and down the ceiling and wall.

I am guessing condensation from the humid air flowing through the light cans to the cold roof. It's been around for almost 2 weeks.

Probably both are an ice dam on the roof... where the melting water backs up and runs back under the shingles..

but I would on the first one check to see where the vents terminate.

My daughter's house in Madison Wisconsin was dripping from doorways of upstairs closet and bathroom yesterday when it warmed following sub zero temps. Looking at the ceiling in the hall near the bathroom, it looks like it isn't the first time. Not enough snow for it to be ice dams which she hasn't had in the past with heavier snows. More likely not enough attic ventilation.
