HUGE Kidde Fire Extinguisher RECALL!!!!!
Thanks for posting this, I have 2 that were affected. I wonder if this has more to do with the plastic handles than the rest - like maybe they deteriorate with age and then break with attempted use? Either way, 2 new ones on the way.

I am guessing its due to the plastic handle and mechanism deteriorating with age - possibly becoming embrittled and non-functional

Mine were made in Mexico as well but the model number is on the list.
Where did you read that only the US made ones were bad?

The link is to the original local story I saw. The headline and story says they are made in NC. I just checked the CSPC website and it says they were made in USA and Mexico. Kidde of Mebane NC is the importer. I just checked mine again and mine is metal handle, so not part of the recall. Link

I had 3, thx for posting. Website was easy to use, said 15-25 days for my new ones.

Date codes do not apply for those older than 2007. Don't waste your time looking for the codes on older purchases.

I have two of the larger units, one made in US and one in Mexico. They are both on the list. I filed this morning over the net and was also told 15-20 days. I was also told, in their response, that instructions on what to do with the old units would be forthcoming. I don't think shooting them off or shooting them with a gun would be a good idea until I get more information from Kidde. One of my units is from 2015 and the other is from 1986. I can't see how a company can produce a product of this type that is expected to function for over 30 years. Same thing on old air bags.

I sent this link to others including a friend who is a contractor in Houston. He said the plastic handles have been known to break for some time.

Wow thanks I've got replacements on the way. We will likely never know but you might have saved someone by throwing this up here.

Fed-Ex Ground is making a few bucks, that's for sure.

Mine arrived today. About 7 days. Kiddie wants the old one back. I'll oblige.

How in the heck can a company survive that kind of recall?

I don't know anything about the company, but it seems their entire product line is safety-related -- extinguishers, smoke and CO detectors. Makes me feel sorry for them, all the trouble they're going through.
