I realize this was posted elsewhere but I thought it too important for it to fade away as a topic of forum rules. So, instead of resurrecting the dead, here we go. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred has changed the lifetime ban of players to end upon death. He stated; "Obviously, a person no longer with us cannot represent a threat to the integrity of the game," Regardless of your thoughts on the timing of the Commissioners decision, I think it is the right decision. Jackson, Rose, and 15 others no longer have that restriction, and the baseball Hall Of Fame will have a meeting in December of 2027 to discuss possible eligibility.

They are still a part of the history of baseball, does it matter if they get a display in the Hall of Fame? I think it would only have made a difference if they were still alive.

If the MLB has any integrity, these two will never be HONORED by being in the HOF. Of all the enemies the American citizen faces, the Democrat Party is the very worst.

The 1919 Black Sox that were accused of throwing the Series were tried in court for fraud and acquitted. It was Kenesaw Mountain Landis , baseballs first commissioner, who handed down the lifetime ban. It is quite obvious that Jackson did not tank the games as his performance was outstanding. There’s a lot to the story that most have never heard. Pete Rose put himself in a position where he could have altered the outcome of a game being a player/manager. He denied betting on baseball for years. Eventually he admitted it. The only ones that know for sure, are Pete and his bookie. I have to agree with the commissioner’s statement, they’re no longer a threat after they pass. There’s also no proof of any wrongdoing. Only speculation that is refuted by incredible displays of athleticism. If you want to keep out players for eternity, go after people that chemically tried to alter athleticism, actively sought ways to avoid detection, and lied about their natural feats. Theres no shortage of those.

The steroid users like bonds, mcguire, sosa, clemens and the like did more to damage the game than Pete ever did. Fuck Manford, righteous prick. Pete should of been in the hof years ago. I hope Pete left a note and said I do not want in the hof after I am gone. This message has been edited. Last edited by: old rugged cross, "Practice like you want to play in the game"

As an Ohio kid that grew up in the 70s, Pete Rose was a hero. He will always be a hero. Did he bet on baseball? Probably. But I cannot imagine he bet against his team. That is not how he rolled. He belongs in the Hall of Fame. And so does Shoeless Joe. The steroid crew, probably not. My grandma believed that Sosa could walk on water. I am sure she rolled over in her grave when the steroids abuse was announced. Do, Or do not. There is no try.

I could not stand Pete Rose when he was with the Big Red Machine. It wasn't until I was older that I appreciated his "never give up" attitude. "Charlie Hustle" belongs in the HOF. I think the comparisons to the 'roid boys are valid and I think what they did was equally just as bad. Not sure, but the 1919 commish probably had deterrence on his mind when he made a lifetime ban. I feel bad for Pete but I really don't think anyone should get a pass, even for being dead. Just sayin'.

The last few hours since hearing this news I’ve discussed with a few friends who at baseball geeks and it’s a serious hot button issue. Either forcefully yes or no. People don’t seem wish wash about this issue. As players they belong in the hall. Bonds Clemens etc belong as well. It’s the e hall of fame not hall of saints. If they have an asterisk or their hall plaque has to say all the bad shit they did then so be it.

They should be IMO but doubt they will. Baseball writers probably won't be able to vote. Gonna be veteran's committee and those can easily be manipulated. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ

I guess for baseball lifetime did mean lifetime, but not forever. I have a few SIGs.

They weren’t banned for life or subject to a lifetime ban. They were on the MLB’s Permanent Ineligibility List. Taking them off this list doesn’t change the fact they cannot play MLB anymore. Jackson admitted to taking a bribe to throw the World Series; how he played is irrelevant.

As I understand it (could be wrong) he only bet that his team would win, and never bet that they'd lose. Big difference. If he was deliberately throwing games to make money, then yeah...keep him out. But, I don't think that that was the case. Either way, a lifetime ban is good for just that...lifetime. The dude's worm food. Lift it. ________________________________________________________ "Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil." Doug Patton.

Okay trapper, you’ve given me something to think about. I still think that with no evidence to malice, Pete should be eligible for consideration, even if the hall waits until death as MLB is now doing. The hall is almost certainly stuffed with members who gambled. They’re not a group of saints. I’m going to guess that a lot of members here are not aware that the HOF is not bound by the rules of MLB. They are a private organization and may do as they wish. As for Shoeless Joe, I’m going to have to mull that over a little longer. There is a lot of controversy surrounding his case. For me it will come down to; Do I know for sure that he knew about the conspiracy and did not report it. I may never know, but to avoid being a hypocrite, I’ll hold judgement on Joe.

No doubt Pete should be in the Hall of Fame, Ole Shoeless Joe - maybe not. As for all the spectacular players left off because of Steroids' and what not ~ I have no problem with them, it was a different era and common place. Let 'em in where they belong.
