Oh, no not again! US warship collides with Japanese tug boat
By Rick Moran

For the 5th time this year, a US warship belonging to the 7th Fleet has been involved in a crash. The guided missile destroyer USS Benfold collided with a Japanese tug boat in Sagami Bay. Damage to the warship is unkown and there were no injuries on either vessel.

NBC News:

The USS Benfold, a guided-missile destroyer, sustained minor damage when a tugboat lost propulsion and drifted into the ship, the Navy said. No one was injured on either vessel and an initial assessment of the damage showed that the destroyer only sustained minimal damage including scrapes."

Maybe we put big rubber bumpers around them like they have at the carnival for the bumper cars?

Or we can get them some stickers.

This is beyond embarrassing. Maddis needs to buy some new seamanship manuals:

It would seem that Arleigh Burke class destroyers are becoming an endangered species in the 7th fleet, as perhaps, are career captains.

Hardly the fault of the Navy.

And "Collisions" with tugboats is a relative term. They happen from time to time. Seems like minor instances like this will now become sensationalized due to past occurrences.

Well if you wreck your boat near an half a dozen times, people will likely have an overblown reaction to subsequent wrecks by your company wouldn't they?

Even if it's just a fender bender. These things are expensive, I prefer we not damage anymore, especially since they are self-insuring with your and my money.

Plus it's extremely embarrassing. We are supposed to have the world's greatest Navy.

The tugboat apparently hit them. What are they supposed to do? Blow it out of the water?

Not enough information at all here. For all we know the tugboat was assisting the destroyer when it lost propulsion and hit the Navy ship.

Maybe it was a Shin'yō-class suicide motorboat?

We don't know how it happened or who's at fault, I still don't like it. Still looks pretty darn bad in light of the other ones.

Don’t tugs have to “collide” with others boats as part of their job?

Well yes. Which is why I said it's a relative term in regards to tugboats. But we don't know from the information what the circumstances here were, if they were working the ship or not.

In 2002 I used to work on a harbor tug as an engineer. We were escorting a ship to a dock once when we suddenly lost steering and slammed into the side of the ship. There was no real damage to either vessel, but it was what we called an uncontrolled collision. I quickly got steering back, and we continued on with the job as normal, but hey...it happens.

Slight thread drift:
I have worked at the LS&I Ore Dock. I never tired at the display of precision used to move an 800 to 1000 foot ore boat up to the dock.

Doc H.
So here's the deal - we just put one of those 360 surround view car thingy viewers on every ship, and a parking beeper, just like Mercedes or BMW. Problem solved....

Haha, of course.

I've also taunted the Captain by cutting power to the bridge and asking over the radio, "Who run Bartertown?" The captain hates when I do that.

Was supposed to be a towing evolution and the Japanese tug lost propulsion. Drifted into the Benfold and did some rubbing. Likely non-issue other than some paint duty for some lucky E-3.

You are NOT a nice person! Big Grin
(The ONLY reason I'm laughing is because I'm not a Captain.)
