Come and listen to my story about a man named Jed
A poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed,
And then one day he was shootin at some food,
And up through the ground come a bubblin crude....

Linky Thingy

A California estate featured in the credits of “The Beverly Hillbillies” now has another notable distinction — the most expensive residential listing in the country.

The Bel-Air estate, known as Chartwell, hit the market Monday with an asking price of $350 million, and was the home of the late Univision billionaire A. Jerrold Perenchio.

Perenchio purchased the estate in 1986, and died in May at 86.

The home was originally built in 1933, and includes 25,000 square feet of living space, including a ballroom, world-class wine cellar, formal salon and "period-paneled dining room," according to a joint press release from listing brokers at Coldwell Banker Global Luxury, Hilton & Hyland and Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices.

The exterior of the home, which was inspired by 18th century French neoclassical design, was used in shots of the Clampett residence on the hit sitcom "The Beverly Hillbillies."

The estate's grounds, which span 10.3 acres, also include manicured gardens, a tennis court, covered parking for 40 cars, 75-foot pool and fully equipped pool house.

Chartwell also includes "sweeping panoramic views of downtown Los Angeles and the Pacific Ocean."

I love the grounds, but would never want a house that big.

How much do you think it would cost to move the whole thing out of California?

Just because they list it that high, doesn't mean it will sell for that. Regardless, some lucky realtor is about to hit the jackpot.

I'd love to see what the total tab per year for taxes, maintenance, utilities, etc. would be for a property like that. You'd need several full time staff.

Even if I had enough to buy and maintain a property like that I definitely would not. I have no interest in anything remotely like that. The location, the lack of acreage, the upkeep needed - definitely not my thing at all.

California - 1% = $3.5M
LA County - 1.16% = $4.06M

$7.56M

For a while, years ago, my office was in the marble clad guest house of a stupid large and expensive mansion, with 24/7 roving armed guards as well as guards at all three gates, an enormous pool, a commercial kitchen with full time staff, and a lot more. The scale of such things is staggering, and the one I was at didn't have as plush of grounds as this one.

The lunches sure were good, though, and those views...

The most expensive home in America is the Executive Mansion.

It costs billions to rent, requires you work there, and your lease is good for no more than nine years, 11 months, and 29 days.

Plus the neighbors on the hill to the east are real assholes.

How long?

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown
