http://philadelphia.cbslocal.com: Tree Company To Pay Record $95 Million Fine For Employing People In Country Illegally

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — One of the largest tree and brush removal companies in the country pleaded guilty to hiring and re-hiring hundreds undocumented workers and will pay nearly $100 million to the feds.

Asplundh Tree Experts, based in Willow Grove, PA, have been contracted by utility companies like PECO, PSE&G, and others around the country to maintain the area near electric and gas lines.

US Attorney special assistant Josh Davison says the company’s management turned a blind eye for years while work was being done by illegal immigrants.

“Having those employees leave the company, and then turn around days and weeks later to be re-hired by the company, simply under different names,” said Davison.

Davison says a six-year audit revealed the company decentralized the hiring process so upper management could bury their heads in the sand while supervisors hired illegal workers through word of mouth referrals.

Asplundh has to fork over $95 million, the largest settlement ever in an immigration case.

Pity they didn't criminally charge those involved.

I would not hire someone who used illegals myself.

My father in law who is now gone, hired a company to put a new roof on his house.

When they came to his door to sell him a roof, it was the guy who owned the company. When they came to put the new roof on, none of the guys spoke English or at least acted like they could not.

He paid up front(big tipoff) so they worked on his roof and left.
He had the same old leaks that he told the owner he wanted fixed. The number they gave him on the business card, was not legit.

The Old Sheriff of our county was hard pressed by many restaurants in the area to crack down on about 3 Mexican food restaurants in this area for using illegals and paying them less than minimum wages. He did make a lot of arrests and stopped this. This was about 7 years ago.
'
He got nasty letters from all over the country protesting his arrests and of course was called a racist for doing what the people of this county wanted and paid him to do.

Good! I hate that company.

Odin Rottweiler was a big playful adolescent. He never met a human he didn't like, and he wanted to play with everybody.

Asplundh guys were trimming trees on the other side of a brick wall that is between our backyard and a street. Odin was prancing around in our backyard, hoping that one of the tree guys would come and play. Odin was no threat to anybody, there was no way he could get to the other side of the brick wall, but the Asplundh guys thought they needed to mace him.

I did not see it happen, my wife did. When she told me about it, I ran out to the street, but there were several Asplundh trucks working in the area. There was no way to identify the bastards that had done it, and all the crews denied it.

As far as I'm concerned $95 million is not enough, by half.

This needs to be one leg of the three legged chair of correcting the illegal immigration catastrophe. The other two legs are equally important. Those are building the wall and removing access to public benefits. We wouldn't need to round up and deport. They'd leave because the teat dried up. I read a report that said illegal immigrants cost 134 billion in public services per year on average. Their tax contributions amounted to 20-ish billion. The remaining of 114 billion was taken from the citizen tax payer. Still think it's cheaper to hire illegal labor?

You could build a nice wall for $100,000,000.

That’s how you pay for the border wall, fine and prosecute all these companies employing illegal aliens. Plus, if there are no jobs they can work here most of them won’t even attempt to come here. Win win

Until they do, this type of practice will continue.

Management needs to see the backside of the gray bar hotel wall.

Well what about enforcing laws that have been on the books since the mid 1980's such as the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986?

I have had to produce documentation of who I am and that I am a citizen numerous times in the last thirty one years before I could get hired.

No, you can't because the GDCs won't allow it.

Good. Hope they learn their lesson. The people in these jobs get hurt very frequently. Think chain saws, heavy equipment and cutting from precarious heights in the vicinity of power lines. I bet they saved a bundle on denying workers compensation claims as well.

After a hurricane, a literal army of these guys show up to clear the power lines. They are appreciated at those times. However, when Asplundh conducts general line clearing maintenance for the various utilities many trees are needlessly butchered.

Here in South Florida trees in powerlines are not cleared nearly enough. There are tree branches in powerlines everywhere down here.

Interesting. The lines here are cleared regularly. Every three years as a minimum. Of course our canopy was trashed several times by huge storms. The power company used to do the line clearing, it is now all contracted out.

I got a new windshield out of them two years ago.

A crew of illegals were working a bucket truck and dropping branches into traffic when one nailed my windshield dead center at the camera

Of course nobody spoke english all of a sudden and they hoped I would just deive away.

I called the number on the side of the truck to complain and they sent a supervisor out to fill out a report. All of a sudden they coukd speak English and started denying any wrongdoing. Well, until I pulled the camera off my smashed windshield.

Literally Safelite was waiting for me to pull in my driveway when I got home.
