ZSMICHAELA 10-ton nutria problem was resolved with 'I know a guy.' Twitter had a lot to say about it.
The weekend started with 200 hunters showing up for a revived nutria rodeo.
It ended with a big, stinking problem: a 10-ton pile of dead rodents.
Rodeo organizers had to get creative to get ride of the carcasses, and fast.
NOLA.com journalist Tristan Baurick captured the entire saga in his series of stories this week.
'It was the most fun I've ever had': Revived 'Nutria Rodeo' bags 1,500 rodents
When Audubon Zoo refused Nutria Rodeo's 10-ton heap of dead rodents, organizers got creative
Twitter had plenty to say, and joke, about the uniquely Louisiana situation.
Article has too many pics and ads to copy in it entirety.

BBMWMaybe someone should revive the fur coat business, as long as the furs come from invasive species.

Sacramento JohnsonHats; make hats out of the fur. One of the best hat bodies ever made in my opinion!

RogueJSKIf you just want to read the article itself, about the nutria and how they were disposed of, use this link:

(In case you're like me and want to know what happened, but don't really care what the Twits have to say about it...

lizardman_uNutria were imported as a replacement fur bearing animal for beaver as the pelts are similar in characteristic. Many "beaver" hats made by Stetson and other hat makers were actually nutria hats.
Nutria are a menace in the Willamette Valley in Oregon where I grew up as they will decimate grass seed crops.
I used to get paid $1.00 per carcass from some of the grass seed farmers when I was a kid back in the 1980s

Il CattivoThanks, Rogue.
I are confused. I thought rotten meat was as much of a turn-on for alligators as it could ever be for crab. I also would've thought there'd be one or two known holes where at least a couple dozen dead nutria could've been dumped when they were relatively fresh where the local fauna would've been happy to make them disappear. I guess I sorta learned something.

ArtieSWhat a great story, and the comments are great.

whanson_wiFrom the thread title, I pictured a single 10-ton nutria. Now that WOULD be a problem!

I would like to apologize to anyone I have *not* offended. Please be patient. I will get to you shortly.

I also thought they were going to need some air support to deal with that problem....

1s1kA big explosion like they did with that whale. At least there won’t be 1000lb slabs of flesh landing on things.

XLTI live in Oregon and you can see them in broad day light along the freeway, I wish I knew a few farmers who would let me walk there fence rows and drainage ditches to have some target practice.

BurtonRWNutria is, AFAIK, the only fur bearing critter in Maryland subject to an unrestricted extermination order from our Dept. of Natural Resources.
No permit, no season, no restrictions. Kill if you can and they’ll thank you for it.
