If they checked every carryon, it was probably to expedite the flight. A lot faster to board and de-board the plane, easier for baggage crew to grab all of them at the gate and throw them in the belly of the plane, baggage crew can then have them at the gate at the destination airport before people even get out of the plane, or perhaps they were already carrying something in the overhead compartments (overnight parcel, food items a hub was low on, who knows).

I've had the airline ask for passengers to change seats onboard due to some need to lighten the weight at the rear of the plane in order to takeoff. Preemptively doing that maybe?

Yes! And the last fiasco convinced me to never fly again! Got to the airport at 0600, 3 hours before flight time. Barely made the flight after all the BS between the airlines and "security".

They had a completely brand new security screening station set up, did not use it.

I asked the knothead doing that part of the screening why they didn't use it. His answer was, "nobody here knows how to use it!".

Instead, passengers got once over lightly body searched, by 3 different stations, carry on bags were simply dumped out on a big table and screened by 3-4 "inspectors".

I could not figure out why some passengers carried on huge bags that consumed an entire overhead bin, and others were denied even fairly small carryons.

That's nothing. My last experience. My flight was flat out cancelled the morning I was supposed to fly out. Booked on a 9:50am the next morning, get to the airport at 7:30am, plane is already there. Mechanical issue.....delayed, delayed, delayed......they fly another plane there that gets there at 3pm. Get to Grand Cayman at 8pm (40 min flight), get to Miami at 11:30 pm. Was supposed to be 3:50 total time.
