Rose can't stand thunder storms, It's either " in your lap " or on your head.

one of the other during a hard rain or god forbid lightening and thunder.

panting and shivering and shedding like she is a grenade.

what can be done to ease her fears?

Our tri color Toy Fox terrier is a big ole lap dog. All 4.5 lbs of her. She has to sleep in bed with us...
Storms don't seem to bother her though, but walk in her cul-de-sac and she comes unglued!

I can vouch for the thundershirt. It works wonders.

Dog coats work for some. Lavender works on others.

I couldn't tell if the Thundershirt helped my dog or not, but I believe it does help some.

The best I could ever do for her was, upon realizing she always went to the same area in the house when scared by a storm, I began to move her crate there as needed. This particular crate was plastic, with holes, instead of a wire crate, and pretty small. She'd climb in, and I'd hang a towel over the wire door, so it was very cozy.

Oh, and don't pet and praise the dog when she's freaking out. You can calmly sit next to her, and maybe massage her ears and stroke her face a bit - that's one way dogs comfort other dogs (licking the face and ears). The point is to not be excited yourself, and to not reward her distressed state with praise.

My daughter's Border Collie was a nervous wreck during t-storms, and when sometimes when the gunships were working the range behind our house.

She started putting a couple of small t-shirts on her and it worked like magic, so she got her a Thundershirt.

It's like a "built in hug", and helps them feel secure.

I thought the thunder shirt was a joke till I gave in a bought one. It works

Ask your vet about a new drug called Sileo for noise aversion in dogs. FDA approved gel applied between cheek and gum .

My big bad GSD (RIP) used to cower under my feet whenever we got a thunderstorm (or Independence Day / New Years Eve fireworks). Sometimes she would go into my computer room and hide under the desk. I guess she figured that was her den. The best thing I found was just to talk to her in a normal calm tone, scratch her head now and then and keep some quiet background music going, try to get her to understand that there was nothing to be afraid of. It only sort of worked. If I'd known about Thundershirt then, I probably would have tried one.

Same here with the bad-ass German Shepard. The cat would lie down next to her to keep her company during storms. It was funny. The cat has absolutely no fear - to point where she may use up all her nine lives.

Had a rescue cocker spaniel, who had some anxieties, especially with loud close thunder, that shook the house! Vet recommended trying a Thundershirt. It helped and after some time the anxieties lessened, until almost non existent. A sudden loud close thunderclap still got his attention, well mine too, but nothing severe. As previously noted by others the Thundershirt has too fit tight, so in the summer you have to watch for heat issues, especially with a longer coated dog. But it did work, in Tanner's case!

Ours has to be led to an extra bedroom, light left on and a fan in the floor blowing on her. Blinds pulled tight. This is a lab.

Another vote for the Thundershirt. Our Brussels Griffon freaks during fireworks and thunderstorms. We got him a Thundershirt and it works. He calms right down after we put it on him.
