I'm buying a place that has no services available and am looking for any info on satellite.

So far Hughesnet seems to be the best option but, I have no actual use references.

If you have actual experience with service quality please let me know what you think.

If you have ever used any type of wired internet before, you will be sorely disappointed in Hughesnet. It was my only option for years. It was better than dial up, but that is all. One HD movie can suck up most of your monthly bandwidth, depending on the package you get. It’s is “bursty “ with lots of lag, so gaming and VPNs are pretty much out.

I had Hughesnet it before we could get DSL out here in the sticks. It was expensive, the latency drove me nuts, and there was a serious cap on the amount of data I could move per day before being put in “bandwidth jail” or some such thing.

In short, I hated it a lot.

It motivated me to coerce the local phone company into offering DSL...which is long story, but involved some requests for tariffed/regulated services... that I withdrew when they suddenly offered me DSL.

Better than nothing.

Usually contract based which is it's own kind of suck.

Not known for being a good value (overly expensive, under performing, high $, low data)

Sucks for online gaming, decent enough for Netflix/etc if you have enough data allowance.

But, it's better than nothing.

If you have to have an Internet connection and that's your only option: It's better than nothing. That's the best that can be said for it.

Latency is horrible. Suffers from rain fade. Expensive.

You didn’t specify where in Texas but I would look to see if there are any rural wireless Isp companies near you.

Hughesnet is terrible. Better to not have it than have it. My dad had it for several years and it was expensive and only usable at 02:00 in the morning.

Another alternative is LTE from a Verizon or ATT type provider.
