Fla. JimKuwaiti report: US gives Israel go-ahead to kill powerful Iranian general
^^**LINK**^^The times be a changing! 2018 Here we come!
Newspaper says Washington and Jerusalem have overcome the differences that saw Americans tipping off Tehran about Israeli attempt to kill Qassem Soleimani 3 years ago.
US intelligence agencies have given Israel the green light to assassinate the senior Iranian responsible for coordinating military activity on behalf of the Islamic Republic in Lebanon, Syria and Iraq, according to the Kuwaiti newspaper al-Jarida.
For the past 20 years or so, Qassem Soleimani has commanded the Quds Force — the branch of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards responsible for military and clandestine operations outside of the Islamic Republic. Soleimani is a key figure in efforts to prop up Syrian President Bashar Assad and to enable him to retake cities and towns from rebel groups during his country’s ongoing civil war. He is also responsible for providing military aid to the Lebanese terror group Hezbollah and the Palestinian Hamas in Gaza — both of which are committed to the destruction of Israel — as well as to Shia and Kurdish groups in Iraq.
Thursday’s report by al-Jarida, which has been known to publish improbable-sounding stories about Israel, was widely picked up by Israeli media.
There was no immediate reaction to the report from Jerusalem or Washington.
Three years ago, Israel came close to assassinating Soleimani near Damascus, al-Jarida quoted unnamed source as saying, but the Americans tipped off the Iranians against the background of intense disagreement between Washington and Jerusalem.
That was during the Obama administration, which, according to reports at the time, was so focused on securing the 2015 Iran nuclear accord that it chose to overlook and even obstruct efforts to clamp down on Iranian-backed terror organizations.
It’s not clear if the reported tip-off was related to efforts to secure the Iran deal.
Today, the Trump and Netanyahu administrations see eye to eye on Iran. Just four days ago, the two countries signed a joint memorandum of understanding laying the groundwork for full cooperation to deal with Iran’s nuclear drive, its missile programs and its other threatening activities, an Israeli TV report said recently.
The source was quoted by the paper as saying that Soleimani’s assassination would serve both countries’ interests and that US authorities have given Israel the go-ahead to carry it out.

Consider the source and the timing.
Kuwait is 60-70% Sunni Muslim. They aren't big fans of Iran's Shiite regime. Iran is currently undergoing rumblings of their own version of the "Arab Spring" (yes, I know, Iranians are not Arab, but a popular uprising is a popular uprising).
If Israel detected an existential threat to themselves, they wouldn't ask anyone for permission to act, but maybe they need something from us to pull off an operation.
But more likely, this is minor-league shit stirring on the part of Kuwaiti news and this idea of "permission" is nothing more than wild extrapolation based on the more friendly tone that the current US administration has taken compared to when Obama was in office.
This is merely Kuwait's way of injecting a little more instability into Iranian politics right now. Iran needs its leaders to be standing up front and center, showing strength. But if the leader of Iran's most powerful state-security organization goes underground because he's afraid of being knocked off by Mossad, or the Company, then that weakens Iran's current regime and response that much more.

Il CattivoWell, per the story, at the very least the Israelis need us to not tip off the Iranians.

Assuming the story itself isn't bogus, I think it more a case of "we won't stand in your way" than "you have our permission."

while this _is_ the 'Times of Israel' it still is a media source.....and our own domestic versions seem to either LIE about the news, or just MAKE IT UP if there isn't any on hand to fill their rented-for-advertising word space.
And they may be serving some kind of unofficial warning/test announcement or anxiety-measurement exercise.
Etc.

bigdealQuestion...Why stop with one general when several seems like a much better solution? Maybe throw in a few of them Ayatollah's for good measure.

Il CattivoI can't see either Trump or Netanyahu being all that worried about collateral damage when that guy gets hit. The people surrounding him need to go too.

110%. Years ago an iranian C-130 crashed and killed top commanders of the Rev Guards. Nuclear scientists were executed by motorcyclists. Israel was deemed responsible. Broadly, I agree with the monotheistic message. But the islamo-supremacists or sharia-supremacists are the enemies of humanity.

corsairThere was many, many times that the US could've captured or, killed him during the hey-day of the Iraq campaign. Because we were so consumed with installing a functioning government in Iraq and making sure it was Shiite dominated, dealings with Iran and 'their people' covered an entire range of exceptions and political immunities. The opportunities were numerous and there's countless 'frustration stories' from operators of all stripes and alphabets.
Qassim Soleimani is among the greatest unconventional warfare strategist ever. His leadership of the Quds Force, being the Iranian instrument to sow discord and stoke the fires of insurgency throughout the Middle East, is also something to respect despite the harm he's inflicted on the US. The CIA should have an entire course dedicated to the study of him.
This article gives some interesting insight to Soleimani. The author is one of the few full-time journalists that cover the Middle East exclusively as their speciality.

downtownvConsidering how Obama hated Israel, to the point of tipping over the crazy Iranians. Trumps team holds the door open for our Ally, verses blocking it.

Because we had 8 years of dolts running things, and according to the article Obama screwed them last time they had this guy in their sights....

That was during the Obama administration...
RE: why publicize it? I doubt they wanted it publicized. For that matter, not sure if it is a real leak or fake news - coming from a Kuwaiti paper, I wouldn't want to bet either way.
