Recondite Raider |
My family and I yesterday, 05 August 2017, were traveling home and were just west of Portland on the Sunset HWY doing about 30 miles an hour. I saw a man on a 2002 Triumph wanting over in my lane (the far left lane) so I backed off and let him get in front of me. I was following him at a distance of 50 feet or so giving him room when I saw he and the bike separate themselves from each other and the gentleman go flopping down the highway much like a rag doll. He had his helmet on, but no other riding gear (he was in jeans and a long sleeved long underwear top). His bike must have landed on the throttle as it careened off into the back of a Subaru wagon. The Man only had some scrapes on his arm that I could see. I Parked behind the wreck and turned on my hazards, and gave a statement to the first responders that showed up. The bike will probably be an easy fix (replace some turn signals on the front and some paint, maybe some dent removal on the tank). I am sure the gentleman on the bike is sore as heck today, and his helmet was all kinds of scraped up, but boy am I glad he was wearing it (and I am sure he is too). Good news is my youngest son didn't have to see any gore, and all parties walked away. the ambulance driver said to me "wow it is a good day when I am more concerned about the motorcycle than the rider in an accident". __________________________ More blessed than I deserve. http://davesphotography7055.zenfolio.com/f238091154

Was he standing on the seat prior to falling off? When you stop to think about it, falling off the motorcycle isn't the bad part. It's only a few feet down. It's the sliding, hitting something else with your body, or your limbs being spread beyond their normal limits if you're rolling.

No, more like the bike went sideways across the lane and shot out from under the rider. __________________________ More blessed than I deserve. http://davesphotography7055.zenfolio.com/f238091154

The call I hated the most when I was on the Hwy Patrol job; "Injury motorcycle crash". Few turn out well. Especially with the crowd that refuses to wear helmets or any safety gear. This guy was lucky.

Did you have to go to school to drive an ambulance?

I went on one on the interstate last year where we were told by dispatch that the motorcyclist went under a camper. I expected a long extrication of the body. Nope... That lucky son of a bitch literally slid underneath the camper and out the other side. He was a little sore, and pretty scraped up on one side, but otherwise fine. Thank God for high ground clearance. Driver of the truck pulling the camper was drunk.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should |
Amazing how lucky some are as you watch the stupidity on youtube videos. Then there a number that have a minor looking crashes that even out the odds. Just like carrying a firearm, a great deal of respect of the hazards is required. ___________________________ Avoid buying ChiCom/CCP products whenever possible.

There's a saying in the medical community, that if you have ever worked in an ER, you'll never buy a motorcycle .

Yes, you have to have EVOC certification which requires classroom lecture and behind-the-wheel testing. My squad also has an extensive training programming and clearance process once you obtain your EVOC certification before you are allowed to drive. In addition to driving the ambulance, we also have to take care of the patient. That requires extensive classroom work, ER rotations, field rotations and hours of field training to be certified as an EMT or Paramedic and cleared to provide medical care.

One of the more popular Youtube female bike vloggers splatted herself over the weekend. Way too fast on an S1000RR with too little judgement used. Anyway, glad your guy had a much better result. A Perpetual Disappointment...

It's that time of year again here in the Hills with the Sturgis Rally. Worse year was 2015 with 15 motorcyclist deaths. Alcohol/drugs, riding too fast for conditions, etc. all contribute. So in your case, you should be proud to be called an ambulance driver. It's the EMTs and paramedics that should be jealous that they aren't 'ambulance drivers'.

I'm a survivor of a near fatal MC accedent. A young gal started a left hand turn and stopped in front of me. Normally it would have been a good scraping up it would seem, very low speed wreck. But my tire hit her tire causing the MC to reverse in Gforce. The handle bars went through me like a recking ball. The next 5 years was touch and go. My point is....one small thing happening or not happening and it's either lights out or walk away.
