Some locksmiths have the necessary programmer to add a fob. You don't want to just get a fob copied - you then have two fobs with the same code. The locksmith will be able to disable the lost fob's code so that it won't work any longer.

At least for Ford, you can program in an additional fob if you have two discrete fobs already. If only one, the locksmith and programmer are needed. I had to do this a few years ago with one of the family cars. Quite a bit less expensive than going to a dealership.

I paid about $5 for an extra key fob for my truck off Amazon. Watched a YouTube video and programmed it myself in about 30 seconds. Hopefully yours is that easy.

Thanks for all the very helpful replies. Smile

I told her to find the damn key today or go to Ace hardware and buy a new one at her expense.

Well she found it in her bed, the first place I always look myself. Roll Eyes

Good for you. I could never get my daughters to do that. I would give it more time, unless you have pets who may be responsible.

Yeah we have found a lot of missing stuff in the trash over the years. Aparently people get distracted and throw out stuff they do not mean to throw out when they have something they want to throw out also in their hands.

Missing car keys are bad but the worst is missing wedding rings. Wife has misplaced hers a couple times here at home but so far we have been able to find them. After the last time where it took almost a week to find them she has been careful to only put them in a specific place when removing from her fimgers for whatever reason.

I just found a Kershaw Skyline folding knife I could not find for several months. It was in the pocket of one of my winter jackets LOL.

I got one for my Buick on eBay for $18. I programmed it myself. The stealership wanted something like $79 for the Keyfob and $99 to program it.

The wife has medical ring splints to reinforce her joints, 17 total, each for a specific joint. They used to run $400 per splint (!) and losing them - or just getting them out of order - was an issue. I made her a pair of "hands" - a base with 10 wooden dowels, mimicking her hands, painted read and green for port and starboard, and she slips the splints onto the fingers in reverse order whenever she has to take them off.

You wouldn't need anything that elaborate; I've seen "ring dogs" - a decorative dog with a long tail - to put wedding bands, etc on.

KEYS AND DAUGHTERS - same idea. If it's not in the pocket, it goes in the same place in the house every time. Have the daughter pick a spot, and stick with it like a bad boyfriend. A hook by the door, a dish on the table, whatever.

Losing small expensive crap does not improve your sense of humor.

Auto locksmith will do it. They'll be able to supply you with the correct key and fob blanks, or point you in the direction of where you can find it inexpensively.

The only key I ever had break (key broke out of the housing) was an eBay special. After that I go to the dealership and pay up the $350 it costs to have them supply, cut, and program the key.

ETA: if my key aren't in my pocket it's in a cigar ash tray I keep on my book shelf.

Now, get a "lost thing finder," like an Apple Air Tag, or a Tile.

Some locksmiths are now able to offer aftermarket key fobs and program them. It depends on the year, make and model of the vehicle. Best to call around to a number of locksmiths in your area to get availability and pricing.

Google the specific procedures for that car. It will make all the difference. Some vehicles can be programmed easily, some can't. My GTO will only take NEW keys, once a key has been paired to a BCM it can't be paired to another. Lots of people buy ebay keys trying to save money and then find they can't use them.

Looking into the specifics in advance may save you pain on the back end.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."
