Coffee Grinders - cleaning

How do you clean your coffee grinder, and how often? I have a Breville with a plastic can at the top that holds about a pound of coffee beans.

I run some coffee beans through mine. Seems to be working fine after 10 years.

I saw those instructions when I got that very model. I guess doing that JUST prior to an espresso grind might(??) make a difference. It just seems like in 3 seconds of a grind the burr is just about back to the same.

I run the recommended amount of Urnex Grindz through my grinder occasionally, followed by a small amount of sacrificial beans (usually some of my wife's less expensive stuff) to flush the remainder of the Grindz out.

I take it out back and blow it out with the air compressor maybe 2x per year then grind more beans.

You know: grind 1 bean, check for fineness and uniformity of grind; then 2 beans….

I have a Rancilio Rocky which is a burr type grinder. About once a year I take it apart and clean the brass burrs. It's surprising what builds up on them, mostly on the outside edges. It's a thick tar like residue. Takes a real scrubbing to get the residue off.

Make sure to thoroughly clean it in between each bean, or you'll ruin it.

I just wipe ours out with a paper towel every now and again, but I've wondered a few times about whether some sort of intert/neutral media wouldn't help after some particularly nasty flavored coffees my wife ran through it.

The bag of beans I buy is 2.25lbs and wipe out my grinder when I go thru a bag of beans.

For cleaning the grinder, all I do is wipe it out and wipe down the burr grinder with a paper towel. Basically want to remove any buildup of the beans. My first capresso broke cause I didn’t regularly clean it.

My Virtuoso came with a pipe cleaner / wire brush, and the manual has excellent disassembly and assembly instructions.

I use this product as well. First found it after some very expensive 100% kona arrived and didn't realize they were poorly roasted. Left a ton of residue in the grinder and Grindz got it out.

It's been a few months, thanks for the reminder. My Delonghi Ariete is no longer available so I should take of it. I really don't change the grind much from espresso or it will clog the filter. I take out the grinder and clean with soap and water. I blow out the crud in the body with a couple bruhes. It's kinda like cleaning a coffee gun. Well, I better get cleaning and while I'm at it, descaling the espresso machine.

This is what I used when I had an electric grinder. It broke but instead of buying another one, I went to using my manual grinder and from time to time, I break it apart and soak it in the coffee stain remover blue stuff. One thing that made me not buy another one was the cleaning part of it.
