IIRC, The Postal Service also considers guns in their parking lots to be a violation.
I believe that is incorrect. There was a suit filed in Colorado (?), I think the name was Bodniy where they ruled you could have weapons in a customer parking lot but not the employee parking lot.
I don't believe CO has any parking lot rules yet. I could be wrong and things may have changed. You know that saying about 4 felonies a day.i park on the street now at USPS now.

That “ban” has never stopped me from carrying…
It'll be interesting to see if the POs around here remove their doorway metal detectors. I'll go out on a limb and wager not.
What metal detectors?
There are no metal detectors at post offices, guys.

My local PO has anti-theft devices that keep people from stealing items they sell with prepaid postage. They just look like metal detectors.

Well, they sure as hell look like metal detectors, very prominently placed at all pedesrian entrances to the buildings themselves.
Maybe just security theater.
The question I have is whether I have the guts to try carrying a sheet metal cutout of a pistol through. Where might I get one of those, anyway?

Wouldn't a metal detector be sounding off constantly, with people carrying keys, pocket knives, phones, all sorts of things?
The support rods that were implanted in my hip and thigh, after the fracture, set off the metal detectors at the county courthouse. I have a copy of the X-Ray on my phone to show to the guards.

They may look like metal detectors, they are not. They read anti-theft devices places in merchandise. Honest.
Agree they are not metal detectors but easy way to test. Throw a wrench or similar in your pocket. If you set off an alarm, no harm no foul Christ I always seem to have a tool or something I forget in my pocket.
I’m not telling you to break any laws or rules or whatever. I would just personally let curiosity get the best me even with no intent to go armed.

Post offices have metal detectors? I'd leave it in the truck if you're that concerned. Not sure how they'd get you for having it in your vehicle unless you had to use it, and at that point you've got bigger problems.
I typically conceal carry but open carried a Glock 10mm all over Yellowstone, never got any guff even in buildings. It's my understanding you can be armed in national parks. I don't like grizzlies, up close anyway

It is legal to carry in National Parks; it is not legal to carry in federal buildings within the parks, that includes gift shops, information centers, and yes, technically even the bathrooms. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Balzé Halzé,

Except on on post office parking lot property. Be careful with that oopsie, not even pulling up to drop mail into the big blue box without getting out of the car. That especially sucks.
This case will be interesting, I sure hope it helps.

If you're going to carry, you should probably be more familiar with the laws.

Feel better?

I thought that too, any space controlled by the USPS was off limits. My concern with Michigan having a requirement to notify law enforcement when carrying what would be the outcome if involved in a parking lot fender bender and police were called.

As a side note, I saw a bank branch in Memphis/Germantown with an entrance that looked like a scanner machine the something the TSA uses in airports. I’m told if it scans a concealed firearm or even a magazine it will lock you up until the police arrive. If my bank ever put that tech in place, I would bank elsewhere. I have never seen a Post Office with metal detectors.

Do they at least have a no firearms sign displayed before you get to that machine?

I think we should have a contest. First place prize is a congratulatory certificate for figuring out the true state of affairs, followed by weekly visits in federal prison from a Sigforum member for the first three months of incarceration, and automatic enrollment in jelly of the month club for life.

I'm pretty sure the way it would work in Phoenix is that you'd be asked to leave before anyone called anyone. If you made a fuss and refused, they'd probably call the local police. I've never seen a USPS cop anywhere but at their HQ in DC. A local cop shows up and says you have to leave and reminds you that you're lucky to get off with a warning. That's your final warning. Refuse that and you are 100% getting a criminal trespass cite with possible referral to USPS police. You'd really have to do something stupid to get in trouble before getting warned.

How's that gonna work when a cop walks in, or the armored car guys? More than likely it's something that someone has to activate, like say after someone has robbed the bank, and that person is now attempting to escape. They get locked in the tube with all the evidence of their robbery.

Now Balze, You know perfectly well that it has been scientifically proven that bears do indeed "sh$t in the woods/". Thus, there is no need to carry into the bathrooms in fear of grizzlies! Common sense teaches us to "follow the science"!
