We're considering tankless water heater replacement options for our older Bradford White 40 Gal.

Do they make any where I can punch in a timer for 5 minutes for kids taking showers?

Sounds silly, but man it would be nice.

How about plugging one end of an extension cord into one of those plug in timers for Christmas lights and leave the other end in the shower?

If it is really an issue, you could just turn it off.

Problem is, the minute you turn it off, it's instant ice cold water. Not like a tank that has some reserve capacity. THat's the big downside of the electric tankless, lose power and lose all hot water immediately.

That would definitely get the kid out of the shower on time.

You can't control behavior of kids. It's been tried many times before.

Maybe not. Had a friend in pre-tankless days who had a daughter who would camp out forever in shower. He had two huge tanks, apparently a mistake.

One evening after she'd been showering forever he takes a couple beers to basement, shuts off hot water supply and settles in for some beer. After about 15-30 minutes of drinking turns it back on, goes back upstairs and low and behold she's still showering.

When asked WTF she tells him that the hot water ran out, she just hung out in the corner of the shower and waited for it to eventually warm back up again and then it DID! Razz

Kids....

Our tankless Rheem came with a remote mount control, you can put it anywhere in the home, it's a simple two wire connection.

I put it in the garage, as we really don't use it for anything but setting the base temp. It does have power on and off, so you could just put the controller in your home and 5 minutes before you want the kids out, press off...

Just remember to turn it back on when you or momma want to use the hot water...

Several companies have wireless controllers for tankless systems.

You can control it from you cell phone.
