Tires Yokohama vs Michelin

I had the DWS06 on my last BMW and I liked them. I put on Yokohama YK740 GTX (Discount Tire) on my Subaru Legacy and for the 30k miles I used them they were great. When I sold the car it still had decent tread left. I looked at the Avid Ascent GT for my current car (back to bmw) last week but it only came in SL and I wanted XL so I went back with the YK740 GTX again. Only have 120 miles on them (it’s been four days) so I can’t really tell yet. It’s going to snow tomorrow so I will get to test that. Obviously the Subaru and BMW are different cars but my driving style is the same.
My daughter will need tires this summer and I will probably get her the same tires unless I switch her to runflats.

I have Yoko's on my truck and love them. Had a a pair installed on my mother-in-law's Honda CRV and they've been terrific there too.

At one point in time I think brands like Michelin had both a quality and performance advantage. However, the beauty of a very competitive and ever improving market has rendered lots of great options all up and down the price spectrum. The lesson to be learned in buying tires today...don't get caught up in name brand.

Yep, so everyone can admire the MICHELIN letters on your sidewalls and recognize you as a person who bought the most expensive option available.

There's a reason why there are so many tire companies in the market today, and that the likes of Michelin are facing the most competition they've ever had to deal with.

I fired Michelin after Defenders on two different cars lasted half as long as they should have. I have Pirelli P4 Four Seasons Plus on two of my cars with good luck so far, and will probably put Continentals on my third car when the time comes. Right now it has Goodyear tires on it.

have had good luck with BOTH Michelin and Yokohama

as others have said - research the specific TIRE you are comparing ... not just the reputation of the overall manufacturer

that said - I am about to replace some Michelin Defenders on my Mazda 6 that have lasted ~70K miles - so that is pretty dang good IMO

but the car has over 130k miles on it so I may not go high dollar on the replacements... looking at 'mid-grade' options like Cooper, Kelly, Uniroyal, etc

plus I don't put nearly the miles per day on the car as I used to.

Have had good experience with Pirelli also - Discount Tire has sold me Pirellis, Yokes and Michelin over the years...

The last set of Yokohama's I had became so loud after 10K miles I thought I needed wheel bearings. Go Continental or Michelin.

Michelin is always at or near the top if we’re talking about quality. Next you’re going to tell us that Toyota Highlander sales are dropping and they’re going to stop making them. Lol

We have these on our Flex & they have been great.
Was going to put a set on my C300, but the RE980AS were a good bit less expensive & the reviews were just as good. Have had no complaints with them so far.

I have never experienced more flats with a tire than I have with Michelin premier tires. 3 out of the 4 replacements were caused from slow leaks from the side wall. The two sets Turanza Serenity Plus we had on previously were great tires with the same wet performance as the premiere. Personally I won’t purchase Michelin brand tires again.

Michelins aren't bad tires. They just aren't the end all of automotive tires. There are lots of good options available if people are willing to shop.

I am no fan of Michelin. Not that it is a bad tire but you can get just as good of a tire (or better) for a lot less money. I have had Yokohama tires before and liked them.

I recently put a set of General Altimax RT 43s on my wife's CR-V and they have been a great tire. $140 per tire compared to an equivalent Michelin at $215. Someone has to pay for all that advertising.

The problem with just suggesting a brand of tire is there's two tiers of tires:

1) A Brand's "Flagship" tires that are made to the best of their ability
2) Manufacturer trash made to a car brand's specs

And since they make fewer of the 2nd, those prices are ludicrous for replacement tires.

Best place to go is Tirerack.com for info. There's millions of customer reviews and they not only do their own Dry/Wet testing, they also do Winter testing in Sweden to figure out how well each tire does.

It’s a lot more than advertising when you’re talking about tires. I’ve never had a set of Generals last near as long as a set of Michelins. Their truck tires won’t even make it to 30,000 on a full sized truck. Also there is the safety factor. Just about every tire is safe when new, but not when they are on their last 25% of tread life. I’ve never had a Michelin show signs of failure. I can’t say that for General, Good Year or Continental (General and Continental are owned by the same company). The F-150 I used to own came with Continentals when new. I had those tires replaced at 26,000 miles because two of them were cracking where the tread meets the sidewall. And it was not weather-checking.
