Most storage facilities have a coded gate, a coded steal door and then your unit is individually locked with your lock. Plus they usually have cameras. That makes you more nervous than a residential garage where someone could back up a truck and be gone in 5 minutes with the whole safe? ______________________________ “I'd like to know why well-educated idiots keep apologizing for lazy and complaining people who think the world owes them a living.” ― John Wayne

Yeah, I am loosening up a little to putting it into storage. I am going to go see the non-climate control storage tomorrow as it is at a different facility and I haven’t seen it yet. It will cost a lot less to move it to and from the storage facility. NRA Benefactor Life Member

I’ve had my safe in my non climate controlled garage in south Florida since 2013. Safe company used synthetic door shims to get it 1/2” off the floor and bolted it down. I have a golden rod and zero rust issues in south Florida (similar climate) and 1/2 a mile from the ocean. I have a cardboard box that fits over 2 sides of it so neighbors don’t know what it is.

Ok, I went and looked at the non-climate controlled storage unit since I had not seen it yet. I think I will go ahead and store the safe with the guns in it there. Obviously it has no power and I have always used a dry rod for humidity control. Is there a desiccant that is better than others or are they all about the same? NRA Benefactor Life Member

Get a few rechargeable dehumidifiers and change them out every week or two to be safe. Toss a couple bags of desiccant in with it in case one of the dehumidifiers takes a dump. ___________________________ Not giving a damn since...whenever...

Do NOT use Damp-Rid it is corrosive (calcium chloride). Silica desiccant is fine. _________________________ “Remember, remember the fifth of November!"

I am looking at Eva-Dry if people recommend that. I will buy two and swap them out when one needs to be recharged. I also plan to put a hydrometer in the safe so I know what humidity and temps it gets to in the safe. NRA Benefactor Life Member

Oh stewardess, I speak jive. |
A garage burglary in metro Austin once cost me many thousands of dollars in losses. I wouldn't keep a gun safe in one, but I'm clearly biased now.
