I haven an AMSEC BF6636 that I have had inside my house in my office for around 11 years. We are getting our house ready to sell so we can build our next home. The plan is to move in with my mom for the next 1-4 years until the house gets built and then all of us will move into the new home.

I hate the idea of my safe not being inside a house, but I will have to store it in my mom’s garage while we live there. This is in the Austin, TX area and I only keep guns and precious metals in the safe. All ammo and reloading equipment will be in a temperature controlled environment. Should I put anything under the safe as a barrier between it and the cement? If so, what is recommended? I currently have a dry rod in the safe and will have it plugged in.

where is all the furniture going to go while you are at your moms ?

Can the safe go with it?

To the point already made, rent a small climate controlled storage unit and put the safe in there along with any other household items that would benefit from this protection.

We are renting two storage units; one climate controlled and one that is not. My ammo will go in the climate controlled unit and furniture will go in the one that is not.

I don’t know if I trust the idea of having my safe full of guns and money in a storage unit.

Not to drift the thread, but are there consequences to storing ammo in a closet that does not have HVAC vents in it? Could get pretty hot in there in the summer.

Ammo will be in climate controlled storage unit.

Put it up on wood blocks or hockey pucks to allow some standoff from the garage floor, for airflow and external rust/moisture prevention purposes.

With a running Dry Rod/Goldenrod, you should be fine. But give your guns a wipe down with Breakfree Collector, RIG grease, or something similar beforehand if you want some extra peace of mind.

Unless your house is on fire, it's not going to get hot enough in a closet in your house to degrade your ammo.

Anytime a safe is on concrete you run the risk of some surface rust on the bottom. If you're going to be putting it back inside your home on carpet you'll want to keep it as clean as possible.

I'd put it on something to keep it off the ground. Pucks, stall mat, wood blocks, or similar. Nothing soft if you want to open the door as you want the safe to remain stable. Avoid treated wood.

generally speaking, you should have no issues storing firearms in a storage unit,

I've bought a few estates that I had to pull out of storage units w/o issue,
mostly cause not a soul knew it was there,


is the Garage insulated?,

my Safe is in my garage, which is insulated,
only 3 walls are external and the door is insulated as well,


I have golden rods in each, and the temps never go below 40 or rarely above 85 in the garage (I have a couple of digital thermostats in the garage,

I think the hottest it has been is maybe 88 on a 100+ degree day,

Would loaded ammo be considered an “explosive?” I could see primers or re-loading powder possibly.

Good thing I just have a lot of empty ammo cans.

No the garage is not insulated.

It would make the move of the safe a lot easier if I could put it in storage as it is way closer. It just makes me nervous.

The humidity isn’t that bad here in Temple...I imagine it’s about the same in Austin. I wouldn’t worry too much. I’d coat all the guns with thick oil and put a golden rod in the safe. And I’d put the safe on a pallet.

If in the house in Austin, would you be able to bolt it to the floor? We have friends who had a safe stolen that contained gold bars; was in their garage in Henderson NV in a nice neighborhood, and they were away.

I’ve had a safe with firearms in a storage unit for 10 years now, no issues except that little surface rust on the bottom in contact with concrete.

Personally, I think that would be safer than in Mom’s garage.

Just make sure mom never forgets to close the garage door when she leaves. That would be my only security concern.

I’m not far from the coast so it’s humid as all hell here. I’ve had my safe in the garage for a tick over 18 months with a 24” Golden Rod and I don’t have any issues.

You should be fine, just follow the advice given above about and keeping it off the ground in order to eliminate the possibility of moisture accumulation is definitely a good idea. I kept the factory feet for mine so I reinstalled them when the safe end to the garage.

Well if I was to do this, I guess it would have to go in the outdoor non-climate controlled unit. The climate controlled unit is inside the building on the second floor. The empty weight of my safe exceeds the elevator weight limit.

That is awesome. If it goes in the garage I will get that! I was just going to put a blanket over it.
