StlheadPrice gouging on tires?
Time to take the snow tires off my truck, and my summer times are looking a little sad. I call my normal tire shop Les Schwab and am quoted 3 options. The cheapest is $335 per tire. I can’t ever remember paying nearly that much for a budget light truck tire. I go to Costco and get the most expensive tire that Schwab quoted for nearly half of what they wanted. I am not super happy with the costco tire service, but I certainly will never go back to Les Schwab. Shop around a bit folks. It’s not just ammo and hand sanitizer that gets gouged.

jimmy123xThat sounds ridiculous. When I was shopping for Michelin 275/60/16's??? for my 2008 Expedition around 5 years ago.....everybody was within 10% of Costco's price...….The only thing I can think of is the guy at Les Schwab was looking at a different larger size...….

Costco does a good job with tires, got my last set of Michelins there for the Eff Juan Fiddy...

sigspecopsDamn, that's an expensive tire and that's their cheapest? I haven't heard about any price gouging on tires but I'm sure someone is gonna do it.

AnubismpYeah I've been surprised that Les Schwab is still in business for what they charge. Maybe I'm missing something. I'll check out Costco but generally go online and I've had good luck with my local wally world tire shop install.

old rugged crossi was recently out of state and needed tires. Had recommendations for a local shop. Been in business for years. Quoted me three different times. All made in Asia somewhere. Never heard of any of them. Price was what I thought was very high. Went to costco and got a set of Michelins for cheaper than any of the ones quoted by the other shop.
This was a passenger car. I would not put michelins on a truck or SUV.
I hear you Stlhead. Schwabs have gone to crap if you ask me for tires sales anyways. Miss ole' Les.

I have 265/75/16 Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws in my wishlist and they are still $148 a tire.
$100 for all 4 installed at Walmart

ExpatLast week the wife was at the local Les Schwab to get her studded tires swapped out. I didn't even look at the tires I threw in the back of her rig. The next morning she calls me and says Schwab doesn't want to mount her summer tires; tread bars weren't showing but very close.
I felt badly I didn't check myself, I'd completely forgotten about replacing the tires over the winter. I would have sent her to the dealer I use.
Wife was there. Tires were off. I said go ahead. $1100 later...it's on me.
Schawb has great service, staff literally runs to your vehicle when you pull up. But prices are steep.

P250UA5Coworker is putting new tires on his Colorado this morning. $139/tire for what he's getting.
Michelin LTX were $202/tire.
This is at Discount Tire in Houston.

9mmnutDon't mean to hijack the thread but what is a nice ridding tire that is very quite? Light 4 wheel truck 255/70/17.

sns3guppyI've been using Discount Tires for a long time. I have them on all my vehicles, my kids vehicles, and other relatives. No questions asked when showing up unannounced for a tire, balance, rotation, or just a pressure check. Tire light on? Fast service, very professional, and they've bent over backward to accommodate us on a lot of occasions. Since I went with Discount, I've never had a tire failure, get credit when buying new tires, for any warranty left, and always get good service.
I feel a lot more comfortable being gone as much as I am, knowing the service and care she will receive if she has a problem, but also feeling fairly confident that she won't have the problem in the first place.

From someone who only buys Michelin for cars, SUVs, 4×4 full-size 3/4 ton vehicles and the motorcycles..

Toyo Open Country H/T. Made in Georgia, USA. They are quiet and ride nice, but I don't like them when towing. That nice ride translates into a squirminess (is that a word?) under load. I've had them for 22,000 miles on my F350 mostly towing a 9,500lb boat and 14,500lb 5th wheel.
Truck came with Michelin AT2s that lasted almost 30,000 miles. Gravel roads caused chunks of rubber to tear out of the tread. The Goodyear Wranglers w/Kevlar and the Toyos haven't done this at all.
The Michelin Primacy I put on our Honda Odyssey last 29,000 miles. They are supposedly a 65,000 mile tire. They were loud and really soft causing the van to wallow around mild curves.
I won't pay the Michelin premium anymore.

David LeeMy van wears 17" Yokos of which 2 will be replaced soon. They seem quite pricey. Add all the fees and they are. Really looking again at my favorite tire for the money, Cooper CS5 Grand Touring. Beautiful running 80,000 mile tire.

Stlhead275/65/R18 I ended up with BF goodrich TA KO2 and they are very quiet for a mud tire.

old rugged crossEm, you say why not michelins on trucks and SUVs. Well my personal experience is that on my Toyota pickups and Chevy suv's they have consistantly been done at 25k miles. Any yes all rotated correctly. I just traded in a Tundra with a costco set of michelins on it. The dealer dinged me $400 because the tires needed replacing with just a tad over 25k miles on them. I knew it and split the cost of new tires with them. I would say over the years I have had about six sets of michelins on these rigs with similar results. So I am done. There are so many better choices for truck and heavy suv rigs. I am not talking about the crossover rigs. I do not consider them an suv.
This is my experience of which I have had first hand.

i've dealt with discount for 35+ years & agree on all the after sale amenities + pricing.
