Elizabeth Warren finds an issue sure to stop her free fall: Wounded Knee

Elizabeth Warren introduces bill to revoke Medals of Honor awarded for Wounded Knee Massacre

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., introduced a bill Wednesday that would posthumously revoke 20 Medals of Honor awarded to U.S. soldiers who slaughtered hundreds of Native Americans -- mostly women and children -- at the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890.

The Remove the Stain Act accompanies a House version introduced earlier this year by Democrats Paul Cook of California, Denny Heck of Washington and Deb Haaland of New Mexico.

“The horrifying acts of violence against hundreds of Lakota men, women and children at Wounded Knee should be condemned, not celebrated with Medals of Honor,” Warren said in a statement. “The Remove the Stain Act acknowledges a profoundly shameful event in U.S. history, and that’s why I’m joining my House colleagues in this effort to advance justice and take a step toward righting wrongs against Native peoples.”

The proposal is co-sponsored by Democratic Sens. Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden of Oregon, Kamala Harris of California and Patrick Leahy and Bernie Sanders, the Vermont independent. Several Native American tribes, including descendants of the victims, have backed the legislation along with veterans groups such as VoteVets and Veterans for Peace.

Wounded Knee took place on Dec. 29, 1890 when U.S. troops with the 7th Calvary began to crack down on a religious movement known as the Ghost Dance. Lakota leader Chief Big Foot and his people were confined to a camp in South Dakota and ordered to give up their weapons.

When a weapon accidentally went off, the cavalry troops opened fire and killed as many as 250 people. Congress apologized for the massacre in 1990 but did not revoke the medals, the military's highest award.

“The Medal of Honor is the highest award our nation can bestow upon its servicemembers for acts of valor," Heck said. "There was no valor in the killing of unarmed Lakota men, women, and children at Wounded Knee Creek in 1890, and the Medals of Honor given for the massacre must be rescinded."

Republican Sen. Mike Rounds of South Dakota has said he does not support the effort because “we’re now guessing” about the roles of individual soldiers.

Just because a particular action is viewed in retrospect as not particularly honorable does not mean the action of those that performed duty worthy of awards was less than honorable. If this moves forward where does it stop.
Will they revoke the medals of shugart and Gordon based on the fact tons of Somali citizens died and the mission was later abandoned?

Does "removing the stain" include refunding all her years of salary gained through lying and cultural appropriations?

Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s (D-MA) great-great-great grandfather Jonathan Crawford served in Major William Lauderdale’s Battalion of Tennessee Volunteer Militia from November 1837 to May 1838, a six month time period during which it fought two battles in Florida against the Seminoles.
Today, there are two federally recognized Native American Seminole tribes, the Seminole Tribe of Florida, which has 4,000 enrolled members, and the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma, which has more than 18,000 enrolled members.

Lauderdale’s battalion fought against the Seminoles at the Battle of Loxahatchee River, in present-day Jupiter, Florida, on January 24, 1838. Then on March 22, 1838, they fought against the Seminoles again at the Battle of Pine Island, in present-day Fort Lauderdale.

A native of Virginia, Lauderdale moved to Tennessee, where he was known as the latest in a long line of Indian fighters, as the Daily Press reported in 1992:
Like other Virginians of his day, Lauderdale developed into an Indian fighter. In 1803 he marched as a Tennessee volunteer to the Louisiana Territory to fight for the United States against the Spanish and the Indians. In the War of 1812 he served under Gen. Jackson and fought against the Indian allies of the British in what are now Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.

William Lauderdale became Gen. Jackson’s trusted understudy in the War of 1812. When the Creek Indians rose up to massacre white settlers in Alabama in 1813 and President James Madison ordered Jackson to defend the area, Capt. Lauderdale and his Tennessee Vols helped win the battle of Talladega. Lauderdale went on to play a part in Jackson’s defeat of the British in the battle of New Orleans in 1815, which ended the War of 1812.

Too bad he wasn’t awarded the MoH.

If Elizabeth Warren was a native American she would have already learned the lesson of what happens when the government has all the guns.

For those interested, a good book on Wounded Knee is Moon of Popping Trees.

A book Warren and other fake Indians should read as it provides a balanced account of the factors that led up to the tragedy.

96% of her constituents have no idea what Wounded Knee is.

The down side is, most of them might think it just happened in Afghanistan or Iraq and think it's a great idea.

This is one of the worst parts of politics - a politician gets in trouble for one thing or another, and then we all have to suffer as she uses her power over policy to grovel and pander.

Because Warren pissed off the American Indian community with her faux claims to heritage, we all get to pay the price with her stupid policy proposals crafted with no other purpose than getting her back in their good graces. Maddening. If she really wants to take responsibility for what she did, she should resign. Senatorial power over federal policy should not be used for personal, political needs.

Happened with Northam in Virginia too. Because he wore blackface, now all of Virginia has to pay the price with his pandering.

Winning the Native American Vote isn't going to make warren President and reminding everyone of her Indian Heritage won't either.
