"The deals you miss don’t hurt you”-B.D. Raney Sr. |
Where? Brands? I’m not sensitive to wool, so that’s not a factor. So far I like wool for all its natural properties. I’m just looking for what y’all have found to be comfy and of good quality. I will never again be one of those “$3/6pk of cheap cotton socks” guys. I’d rather pay for something that will last. I have a couple pair of wool boxers & while they are ok, I’d like to know experiences of other members. I also have several pair of wool socks in varying weights. Darn tough & other brands. I’m becoming disillusioned with UA, a bit. Some from their political actions, but mostly from a lack of performance, un-naturalness, and odor retention (yes, vinegar in the wash gets it out mostly)

Never done wool skivvies, other than long johns, so can't help you there, but I do wear merino wool socks year 'round. From -20F to 100F+, they are as comfortable as comfortable can be. I wear Wigwam brand and they run somewhere around $15/pair. Well worth it given they've lasted nearly ten years. I guess my only recommendation would be to look for merino. ________________________________________________________ "Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil." Doug Patton.

Yes, that’s a given. Also things advertised as “wool” can sometimes have a very low wool content. I’ve seen stuff with only 10% merino wool advertised as wool. It should really be hawked as polyester or spandex. I don’t mind paying for quality. And again, I’m looking for summer weight stuff. Here in east Texas I can only justify the winter weight stuff for a few weeks. Thanks.

It is hunting branded (they do have solid colors) but First Lite is considered by a good many to be the best there is. I own plenty but can not compare since I have never owned any of the others. Been very happy with mine and the customer service is good. It is spendy no doubt but I am glad I spent the money on mine. It is athetlic cut and important to utilize their size chart instead of going with your normal size. If you want to save considerable money and are patient keep an eye on archery talk and rokslide classifieds. -----------------------------------

I have been happy with Duckworth for USA made and USA grown wool products: https://www.duckworthco.com/ Triple Aught Designs has some good products with lighter weight tee shirts USA made of NZ wool and a little nylon: https://tripleaughtdesign.com/shop/traverse-tech-t/ Voormi has some Colorado 'grown and made' products with differing amounts of wool that I am looking to try this year: https://voormi.com Garage Grown Gear is a good place to find new startups with high quality and they have a sign-up discount: https://www.garagegrowngear.com Ibex used to have great gear but sadly, closed last year. "Summer weight wool" sounds like an oxymoron (what about a "winter weight tank top"?). Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it. You can't go wrong with any of the Big-3 for Merino. Icebreaker- The biggest name in the marketplace for Merino wool, good t-shirts and mid layers. Smartwool- Best price value, socks and base layers are their best pieces. Ibex- Going through a re-org as new owners saved them. Most stylish and easy to wear. I very much like their VT shirts both, long and short sleeves. For socks, Darn Tough is my go-to brand for wool. Durable, comfortable and they don't get rough after several launderings. There's a wide variety of sock brands out there, I wouldn't get too locked-in a single brand for socks, it's good to have a favorite but, most sock collections are pretty broad.

I wear OmniWool from Sams and Cabelas midweight. The Cabelas are actually only 20% wool but nice. Need to get around trying the Duluth Alaskan Hardgear Merino wool underwear. But at $50 a pop I have not taken the plunge. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have. Smartwool and Icebreaker for me. I try and buy past season stuff on markdown to lower the price. True to size, fit well, hold up, comfortable.

What’s the scoop on Ibex if you can spill the beans? They’re my wife’s go-to and she was very unhappy when they said they were going out of business. Knowing that they’re coming back made her night.

Wool socks all year around, at first frost I'll put on merino wool long sleeve undershirts. If it really gets cold 10 degrees and below I'll add the long johns in wool. I like wool as it keeps me warm without the bulk, I can wear a shorter jacket open, easier to draw from. Chris

Do No Harm, Do Know Harm |
I wear smartwool medium weight hiking socks year round. Comfy in winter or summer I tried tons of underwear, finally settled on Exofficio 9” sportmesh. They aren’t wool, but they are the best I’ve found. If it gets cold I wear LLBean wool long underwear. For undershirts, I have some wool ones, but I get too hot in them unless it’s real cold. https://www.snewsnet.com/news/...ibex-outdoor-apparel They recently got purchased and saved from being insolvent. As a former sales rep of there's, they weren't competitive with pricing and marketing, they were really good at quality sourcing and design, thus they were third banana in a limited marketplace. They're supposed to be back-up and running this Fall with Direct-to-Consumer, meaning website and probably their store in Boston; hope they retain their popular styles. They used to hold an annual big tent sale near their HQ in Vermont, it was great for locals but, not so good for dealers. The hard part with wool sportswear is it only really appeals to those who live in the mountains and Northern climates, those living in the moderate and southern areas usually requires some level of convincing.
