The reason is simple: They didn’t need him to rationalize why they didn’t.
Cripes, I’ve seen posts here stating the reason someone won’t join the NRA is because they send too many solicitation letters.

The average gun owner is probably like the average voter, they are apathetic. We are not average gun owners! We understand the importance of liberty and of being self reliant. Ollie North will have zero negative impact on NRA membership numbers. I only see membership numbers going up.

Oliver North, on the other hand, was a gunrunner for real. Not play acting.
