Bezos' Net Worth Cut In Half: Amazon CEO Announces He Is Getting A Divorce
Meh. I could not care less what happens to him, or his wife. I suspect Amazon will continue to run no matter what. (Not that that is particularly important to me, either.)

Not here. In this case it would probably be better to stay separated but married. The marriage predates Amazon and he had serious cash prior to that. Family court will screw him and the instability is not good for AMZN shareholders because the big question is whether she holds onto her shares or liquidates.

Why would she liquidate? If she holds onto her shares, she can continue to boss her ex-husband around as a major shareholder. What divorced woman wouldn't want that? Big Grin

See pics of her 20 years ago? He's not the only one to medically alter his appearance.

We're missing the big picture here. What if she just wants the impish nerd back? Minivan, mac'n'cheese for dinner, quiet night on the couch watching PBS nature shows?

I think you make a great observation. If one wants to go back to humble roots, it is probably the wife. I have not seen old pictures of her, and I don't know their minds, but based on the odds, I would guess that her transformation was done to please him, while his transformation was done to please... him.

Nah, it will take the lawyers long than that to hash out the prenup. He may or may not have had one for the last marriage, but he absolutely will for the next.

You have very valid point but major shareholders are reporting a concern. She’s not poor and she has no reason to liquidate or even do a partial sell-off.

They've been married 25 years. Amazon has been around for 24. I don't know what this says about them having a prenup. She has been there for the whole ride.

Edit: He was a hedge funder before he married her. So he likely had assets to protect at that point. A prenup now seems likely.

This talk about a prenuptial seems moot. They were married well before they became billionaires. Or at least multi-billionaires many times over. I don't believe a prenup can stipulate assets that may or may not be ascertained in the future.

And honestly, any prenup that did say something like that would likely be thrown out by a judge in any case.

What makes you say this? There are certain conditions under which a prenup can be voided. Being forced to sign it under duress is a biggie. And being completely one sided can be an issue. But generally they can generally stipulate whatever the two sides agree to.

For instance, if the language gave the wife 20% of community assets up to a random limit, let's say $10,000,000, would likely be completely valid. Especially if he wasn't a billionaire at the time it was signed.

I was going to say exactly that.

They weren't Amazon-rich when they married, but they did meet as employees of a hedge fund in the 90s, so 1) at least one of them likely had assets worth protecting with a prenup; 2) they're not financial dummies.

If they made a deal, we'll likely never know the terms, although there may be some hint is the SEC filings for Amazon.

LOL!

Talk about Prime Big Grin

Okay, that's funny! I didn't catch it the first time around.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." There won't be a new wife until six month after the prenup is signed.

Ha, yeah right. $10 million out of a over $100 billion fortune. Any decent lawyer would have that torn up in a second for being "unreasonable."

Wasn't unreasonable when it was signed. They both agreed to it in good faith.

Here's a link to a list of reasons a prenup might get thrown out. Change of financial status isn't one of them.

Well the author of this article is fond of making assumptions, not just about the prenup, but also that the divorce would be done in Washington State.

I made sure to specify "State," because Bezos also has a home in the District of Columbia, aka Washington DC. As far as I know DC is not a "community property" jurisdiction, but is an "equitable distribution" jurisdiction.

I am not aware of anything to require either party to file for divorce in Washington State, rather than DC.
