Special Operations Command is apparently training o the new Skyraider II down Oklahoma way. Seems one had a bit of a mechanical issue and had to put down. Considering ti is based on the Air Tractor platform which is designed to get down in the weeds and is built with that in mind. It held up remarkably well. I appreciate the stop sign embedded in the forward edge of the wing and the two apparent wing strikes with utility poles. As they say any landing you can walk away from is a good one. Bonus points if you can take off again afterwards.

I've been politely telling fools who say "That's AI!" or "That's not military, that's just a crop duster!!" that they should really take a sec to educate themselves. _______________________________ The artist formerly known as AllenInWV

No wonder, it crashed into that stop sign.

It hurts me a little to see an Air Tractor called a Skyraider. Glad they got it down safely, though. ----------------------------------------------------------- Any comments made by this poster are my own and do not reflect the views or opinions of my employer.

That's an Air Tractor 8O2. Modified for the Military, of course. They're aerial spray rigs. I see them flying frequently here. 1st time I saw one I thought why is the Air Force flying aerial spraying rigs, the Air Tractors. LINK TO Air Tractor Crop Spraying Rig These babies fly like a dream, very steady and sturdy, just watch some crop dusters and how they fly. Super sturdy, it's hard to break one. They're made in Olney TX, about 45 minutes south of Wichita Falls TX. .This message has been edited. Last edited by: OKCGene,

It's an OA-1k Skyraider 2, which isn't yet operational, and is designed as a replacement for the U-28 Draco. There is an ANG unit that will ultimately train active duty pilots, and also an active duty squadron (17 SOS) that is currently working to stand up initial cadre. The mission will be surveillance, reconnaissance, and light strike in support of special operations. The advantage of using an air tractor platform is long loiter time and heavy lift capacity for sensors, special equipment, and of course hard points for missiles/rockets. Several platforms were considered (I was not a fan of this one) but this is what ultimately was chosen when they had a fly off competition five years ago at Eglin Air Force Base. originally they were supposed to have a fleet of over 70 but I think the buy has been curtailed and SOCOM & AFSOC is planning on 40 or 50 of these things. It was supposed to be operational already, but they've had a lot of issues and they still can't even shoot or fly IMC. It is NOT ready to replace the U-28 in combat and major teething issues are hampering the entire effort. this is the second crash (first one resulted in minimal damage and no injuries) and I predict there will be more.

There are two-three Air Tractors down the road from us at a literal airstrip in the middle of bean and corn fields. Those pilots fly like WWI fighter pilots when they spray. What a cool aviation career. That plane will probably be ok. I wonder how the USAF pilot got themselves in that situation. I’ve read and heard they’re not super demanding airplane to fly.

Sorry to hear that. The air tractor has a reputation as a solid airplane that cropdusters run hard and long without problems. Either the plane isn’t as solid as its reputation or the “conversion” to military use has not been well managed.

A witness said the engine quit. An Air Force Special Operations Command’s OA-1K Skyraider II turboprop plane was on a training mission out of Will Rogers Air National Guard Base on Thursday when the crew experienced engine failure and was forced to make an emergency landing just before 2 p.m., KOCO News 5 reported Link engine quit Out of gas? Those turbines are extremely reliable. Right now on ADSB there are several other flying around south of OKC. Training continues. .

OA-1K Skyraider II Has Off-The-Shelf Rifle Sight Mounted In Its Cockpit EOTech holographic sights are mounted on the special operations light attack plane's dash for a reason you might not expect. Joseph Trevithick Published Nov 20, 2025 7:50 PM EST Each of the U.S. Air Force’s Special Operations Command’s (AFSOC) new OA-1K Skyraider II light attack aircraft has a somewhat unexpected feature in its cockpit. Nestled on the right side of the dashboard in the aircraft’s front seat is a commercially available EOTech XPS-series holographic sight, which is commonly used on tactical rifles. TWZ reached out to AFSOC after @GansoConABomba on X called attention to this overlooked and somewhat peculiar aspect of the OA-1K in a post on Monday (seen below). The discussion on the X post had users positing what the commercially off-the-shelf sight was intended to do. Now we have a definitive answer to that question... This is an older thread. An Air Force special operations prop plane crashed after pilot turned off fuel The pilot was an experienced special operations flyer but was new to the tiny Skyraider II and flying with an instructor. Matt White Published Jun 26, 2026 4:41 PM EDT An Air Force special operations plane made an emergency landing last October on a rural Oklahoma road after a student pilot mistakenly switched off the fuel supply to the plane’s engine while 2,300 feet in the air. When the plane skidded to a halt in an empty nearby field, a stop sign from the road was lodged in its wing. Neither the student nor the instructor pilot on board, who took over the plane’s controls as the engine sputtered and the plane began to fall from the sky, were hurt in the October 2025 mishap outside Oklahoma City. But the Skyraider II, which belonged to the 17th Special Operations Squadron at Will Rogers Air National Guard Base, was a total loss, which investigators valued at $17 million. The squadron trains Skyraider II pilots for Air Force Special Operations Command, or AFSOC... Complete article: https://taskandpurpose.com/new...r-crash-fuel-report/
