Interesting -- the same reasoning given for keeping black folks in grave-digging, transport, support, and some segregated combat units -- exact words "social experiment." I guess it's too bad that Truman decided to experiment socially when he integrated the services.

Truman wasn't paying for people who identified as black to become black before they were assigned their duties.

Back to the OP, it's refreshing to see the President and military actually doing something that makes sense, lowers costs and increases effectiveness without pandering to the minority and SJWs.

I think you're giving Huckabee too much credit for a quote that's been around a long time.

Good to see this happening. Expecting U.S. taxpayers to fund sex-change operations is the extreme end of a misguided policy from the previous administration.

What in the Hell are you talking about? He said "social experiment". OMG, he's a racist! For God's sake, man. Get a grip.

That is a great start. Now if they could also go back to the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy, it would be even better. Personally I believe no gays in the military would be the best solution.

This is such refreshing news.

There seem to be two different issues here.

One, is transgenders serving in the military. I have zero problem with them serving, and I disagree on barring them, since there are a couple good soldiers I know we will lose because of that.

Two, is tax-payer funded surgery. THAT, I agree we should not be doing. If the soldier pays for it themselves (as the ones I know did), why should they be barred from service?

Same reason I have no problem serving with people who are openly gay. I care that you can do your basic soldier duties. I have zero interest in who you sleep with, male or female.

I'm sorry, but a man dressed in a woman's militany uniform and showering with other female soldiers is a problem. How anyone cannot recognize this is beyond me.

Most gay men I have met appear to be constantly on the prowl for more sexual partners. When I have complained to their supervisors about being harassed by them, their aggressiveness has increased dramatically. I see no upside having homosexuals in the military.

Our navy appears to be dramatically affected, perhaps because of the physical restrictions of being on a ship. I know people that would never consider enlisting in the navy because of excessive homosexual activity onboard ships. We do not fund a navy so gay persons can get together, we fund it for protection. I say kick all of them out of the military, they can do their "thing" in San Francisco or other weird city.

Enlist as the sex you choose to be, fine. But don't think once you are in Uncle Sam should have to foot the bill to physically change you to the opposite sex.

I think they pushed this too far with the surgery requirement and that the ban would not have been reestablished had that not been part of it.

This. Once a group gets something that the others do not, it has a definite effect on readiness and morale.

Both would serve the mental well being of the persons involved, but Sgt Jones has special privilege.

It's about dammed time someone simply said "NO!" to all this coddling and enabling of MENTAL ILLNESS!

My wife the counselor said as late as her being in college in early 2000's, people who were confused about which gender they were, were categorized as having Gender Dysphoria, a documented mental illness!

You've pretty much described most straight men I serve with as well Big Grin

I've had far more problems with gay men civilian-side than I ever did in the army. But, different people, different opinions I suppose.

I laughed out loud when I read that. That aptly describes my time in the Marines as well. Especially in the Phillipines. The line at sick call on Monday mornings was always epic. Big Grin

But haven't you heard the latest enlightenment? Gender is a choice, not a matter of DNA. A person can be male on the outside and choose to be female in heart and mind. And a persons choice tomorrow doesn't need to be the same as that persons choice today. And if we don't accept that enlightenment, we are bad. Wink
