Really - I tried them for the first time on my last trip South and was incredibly disappointed. Why ruin a perfectly good nut? Must be a Southern thing. Wink

Yankee! (That’s an insult Wink )

Of course boiled peanuts are a southern thing. Salty, Cajun, spicy…all of them are great!

Best when purchased form roadside vendors with a pickup truck and an EZ Up tent.

Just follow the series of signs that start about a 1/2 mile uproad: "Vine ripe tomatoes, gator tail fritters, zucchini, navel oranges Cajun Boiled P-Nuts!

Very interesting. I've enjoyed Virginia peanuts all my life but knew nothing about this old way. I've never given any thought to how a peanut is processed but it makes sense that modernity would have ruined even a peanut harvest. Couple of cans ordered out of curiosity and to support Mr. Barnes. Thanks for posting this.

UPDATE 2/15/22: That is, in fact, a damn tasty peanut. Does seem a little sweeter, more flavorful, than other local VA peanuts I've had. Good find.

Just ordered 2 cans of the Single Origin. I've been all over Virginia and have bought lots of Virginian peanuts, but have never come across these.

It looks like the way they dry the peanuts in the field by leaving them on the vine allows some of the nutrients to flow back to the peanuts as the vine dries out.

While I plan on mostly eating these straight from the can, would it be sacrilegious to put them into a curry or stir fry?

You can buy raw peanuts at the Asian stores for stir fries....much cheaper way to go. Wink

I ordered a couple of cans after reading this thread.

The peanuts were delivered this morning. They really are very good peanuts. Elisha is right--they are sweeter.

Yeah if I had the money like I used to, I would order a couple of cans to support them and see how they taste. I liked the video, but I just can’t afford to pay that much for a can of peanuts.

Hell, I barely buy steak anymore with how much the price of beef has gone up.

Don’t know about his peanuts but the guy is a marketing genius.

roadside vendors

I made a long road trip from coast to coast in both the most southern route E and the next one N going back W about 10 years ago. Tried all kinds of local cooking. Had been looking forward to 'boiled peanuts' for years.

Severe disappointment on all 3 separate occasions in 3 different states.

On the other hand did get introduced to Waffle House. Like the gravy etc. Pork chops so thin you could almost read thru them. First time ever had bacon sliced so thin it only had one side!

I'd go back for another Waffle House run. Somebody's getting better boiled peanuts than I came across. Enjoyed the peanut story history.

My Single Origin peanuts arrived today. They are better than regular peanuts.

Pretty pricey so I’m certainly not sharing, and it won’t be a regular staple.

$13 a can for 10 isn't too crazy. They are not small cans.

Mine arrived yesterday, they are delicious. Not small cans, but we've eaten half of one already. Thanks for the video!!!

I didn’t get the Hubs. The Whitley sounded good as well and was more convenient to order. Is it much different from the Hub’s or pretty similar?

They are good peanuts. And pretty consistent. But while I love nuts and peanut butter and such, I’m not sure I can tell much difference between them and other choices at the supermarket. At least in terms of taste - they are larger in size.

I like them but I’m not a gourmet. What am I looking for here that makes them better than other peanuts at the market?

Do eat these plain? Or make peanut butter out of it?

I also got Feridies - it’ll be awhile to finish the Whitley and opening the Feridies.

We got ours and have eaten a 1/2 can. Best way to describe was my wife's "They're very peanutty". I'm glad we're trying them, not sure we'll reorder but I'll send some for gifts to family.

I've got to say the Sigforum wisdom got to me and I ordered a can. I'm a nut lover, and peanuts are right there. Got my can Monday, and eat a goodly amount. Somewhat addicting, because they taste so fresh and clean with a strong peanut taste of yesteryear. I think this big ass can will last awhile, and I'll order again, maybe to coincide with our next family get-togethering. My SIL's and grandkids (college age large people) love them some snacks.
