I have heard about a couple of places in Owensboro that have barbecue mutton. I have never had that. I will be in Louisville in a few weeks. It looks like about a 2 hour drive from my hotel. I think I have the time. Is it worth the trip? Is one place better than the other? Thanks, Ironworker.

Mutton has a strong flavor. I personally love it, but many people don't. Both places in Owensboro have a following. I would suggest avoiding the buffet. I just order the mutton sandwich. West Kentucky BBQ is good stuff.

Well, I love BBQ Mutton, but you don't find it around here to much.

Owensboro is known for BBQ Mutton, so there are quite a few places that do it well. Moonlight BBQ comes to mind. That's on West Parrish Ave., I can't think of anyone else right now. It's been awhile since I have been there.

Oh, Old Hickory Bar-B-Que on Washington Ave. Oh, don't forget the Kentucky Burgoo.

On the subject of mutton, it can have a slight "gamey" taste that you don't find in the younger lamb.

Can’t speak to the mutton but I’d say stay in LOUISVILLE and enjoy the food there. Moonlight BBQ is very popular but I’m not a fan. Old Hickory is better, in my opinion, if you decide to make the drive. There are lots of great places to eat in Louisville so staying there would be my pick. If you venture out, however, it’s a nice drive taking Hwy 60 across.

What ARman said: Moonlite (not moonlight) Bar-B-Q is fantastic! My wife and I were overwhelmed when a Kentucky friend took us there.

Mutton and other meats to choose from. A dessert buffet that is fantastic!

It's been a while but my memories of Moonlite BBQ are good ones, especially the banana pudding.

I was born there. Old Hickory for the win. Grew up eating there all the time. Moonlight used to be really good but has gone down hill the last few times I was there. That 5 years ago and I don't go back there much anymore.

I do miss Old Hickory for both mutton and ribs. They also smoke an outstanding ham but that is not on the menu. You bring them a ham and they smoke it - mostly around Thanksgiving and Christmas. I don't think anyone in Owensboro eats honeybaked ham.

You can’t go wrong with either.

Moonlite is a nostalgic old buffet. So you can get a little bit of everything.
Old Hickory is very good as well.
We usually ended up at Moonlite.
And yes you must visit Whitaker’s Gun shop.
Also while in Louisville make sure you eat at

And Havana Rumba

A little east in Shelbyville is KenTex BBQ. No mutton but very good and much closer I always try to hit KenTex when I have to go to Louisville.

What’s the difference between mutton and lamb?

Lamb is under one year old. Mutton over one year old.

Bad news Black, the strip shopping center's roof fell in on Havana Rumba.

Good news is they have found a new location nearby. Smile

It's not quite the same thing, but there are a few BBQ places in Texas famous for lamb ribs. I keep meaning to get to one but haven't yet.

Mutton is an acquired flavor/taste. Similar to that of lutefisk or taleggio. Very strong, and I think it has to be something you were raised with, in order to like it. Personally, I think it tastes like spoiled beef.

I wish you the best, but note where a good burger joint is along the way. Just in case. Wink
