Big time.

Whenever I hear of someone wanting to CCW a full-size pistol, this immediately pops up: where and how are you carrying that chunk of steel & plastic?
Lots of first timers want to carry like they're an LEO...ummm, no.
Some counties are sticklers and others are a bit more casual when it comes to printing and inadvertent reveals. You'll spend quite a bit of time discussing this during the academic portion of the course. Much comes down to how that department enforces such, how that LEO interacts with you and most importantly how you interact with that LEO and/or, the person that reported you.

I really like my leather holsters made by SIGforum member Ryan Grizzle. Take a look at his website to see the impressive quality of his work. I have found him to be very responsive to questions.

This should be in the “CCW Methods & Issues” section…

I put essentially the same question in CCW Methods & Issues 2 days ago and have 0 responses.

For the OP: it will be 3 months from your interview until you get approval, you then have 90 days to get training. I'm going with Practical Defense Systems (Link). My buddy is going to Poway Weapons & Gear.

Anyway thanks for all your comments on the question asked in the wrong forum. Roll Eyes

First, let me clarify that in the past there was an “interview” when applying for a CCW in San Diego but that is no longer the case. You basically will have an “appointment” with a clerk who will go over your application with you to insure your proof of residency and answers on the application are current and complete. After going over your paperwork, they take your picture, your prints and have you pay your fees. Once you have your appointment, your application goes through a review process which can take up to 90 days. Once approved, you will receive notice giving you a timeframe to complete your class and qualification; I had to complete my qualification within 30 days (this was several years ago) but I believe they’ve increased it to 90 days. After sending in your qualification paperwork they will mail your license to you.

Also, once you have an appointment date, keep checking back for cancellations which can move your appointment date up substantially; a shooter I know got moved up 6 months.

As for belts and holsters, I wear an Armour belt (Beltman is another option) and a Crossbreed Super Tuck at 4 o’clock. Both have served me well.

Hope this helps…Semper Fi

I would think not in most states. Here in Texas, I applied online, took a 5 hour class with a 50rd shooting test, cost was $50. Emailed my class paperwork, along with electronic fingerprints ($10), the state application process was $40. Got my permit in 10 days, good for 5 years. Total cost was $100, I just renewed last year for $40. Plus no guns listed on permits, we can have a hundred guns in our quiver to carry.

Congrats on getting a permit in CA. The commies make it tough, next to impossible in many counties.

Yep the People's Republic of Kali is a whole 'nother animal, and each county is different. BIG congrats to getting your permit though, it takes a lot of dedication to see it through there.
In Alaska, where I reside, we are a permitless carry state, so none is required. However our permit is recognized by 37-38 other states, so is worth having. We also offer a "NICS Exempt" option for an additional fee, and they are good for 5 years. 12-hours of training to get the permit, usually split into 2 days, but some will do it in one long day. Legal considerations and situations are day 1, and basic handgun fundamentals and shooting quals are day 2.

To the original question: a good belt is a must. Several have mentioned Nexbelt, and I also use them, and really like them. They have several specific carry belts. Wilderness is another good belt, and Tenicor makes a carry belt that I like quite a bit as well. Holsters are another thing......for a P229 I'd probably opt to carry IWB at the 5 o'clock position with something like a Milt Sparks summer special, maybe a versamax. But it depends on your body type. Final point: you'll want to mess with your pistol....don't. It will be weird, and you'll feel like everyone is looking at you. They aren't, as a general rule. Be aware of your surroundings.

Another question- is the 229 the only gun you have/will be carrying?
You might want to consider adding other guns while you can because as you know, we can only carry what we have listed on the license, and it's good to have a different option so you are not stuck with something that may not work out well for you.

Like Nismo said, consider buying a smaller pistol as generally they will not let you add a pistol to the permit until the next renewal. Having two on the permit gives you options. For the 229, you will need a good stiff belt. Armour Belts are super stiff, that would be my first choice. https://armourbelts.com/

For the P229, would be easiest to carry it OWB. Try to find a pistol that is thinner and lighter than the P229. If there was a shooting, the police will take your gun and will not return it until the criminal case and appeals have completed. Best to have a back up.

I like the simplicity of kydex, and the draw is faster and easier. However my Ryan Grizzle holster holds the P320c in tighter than my kydex holster.

Also, I like carrying at 3:00 or 3:30 much better than t 4:30. When carrying at the 3:00 position, minimum cant hides the grip better IMO.

I use a 511 belt that has a plastic inner liner, it’s very stiff. https://www.511tactical.com/op...-belt-1-34-wide.html

I usually carry a commander sized 1911 (or G19) in an IWB kydex holster. https://www.amazon.com/Conceal...mFtZT1zcF9hdGY&psc=1

Or I use a OWB leather holster with a thumb break. Much like the DeSantis thumbreak holster(I think it’s a fletch) I dunno I’m on vacation and it’s not right next to me. https://www.desantisholster.co...-break-scabbard-c-l/

If it’s summer and I have to carry the Jframe it’s in a pocket or in a leather IWB and a loose t shirt.

I’ve tried all the others. I carry at 4-5oclock behind the right hip, I’m right handed.

I’ve carried a gun since 1988 professionally. And I’ve narrowed them down to what works for me. The only other holster I still have is an Alien Gear that’s got a leather back and a kydex holster with easy off clips, I wore it in the same place. https://aliengearholsters.com/...-waistband.html.html

A holster is very personal. I’d suggest you ask every one you can what they carry and why and see if any feel comfortable to you.

One other thing, when preparing for the practical test, I would go online and watch some OpSpecTraining videos of how to practice using the bump drill. The Bump Drill trains your central nervous system to be very much in control of the trigger finger. You want to isolate use of that finger from everything else, so you are not jerking the trigger. Bump drill and dry fire both. Try 50 dry fires for every live round sent downrange.

I used to be a very mediocre pistol shooter, but after taking multiple classes from JLJones and OpSpecTraining, even I became good. At my practical test I was a bit nervous and pulled three shots left, but still scored 47 10's/X's plus the 3 9's. So 497 points out of 500. Without quality training I would have been like everyone else that day, scoring 200 out of 500. Jerry and Bruce both push dry fire and bump drills, and they are 100% correct.
