This is about 1/4 mile from where I grew up HERMANTOWN — Three Twin Cities area residents were killed overnight when the small airplane they were flying in crashed into a home and yard just south of Duluth International Airport. Hermantown officials said one woman from St. Paul and two men from Burnsville, Minnesota, all in their early 30s, died in the crash. Names of the victims are being withheld until their families are notified. https://cdn.forumcomm.com/dims...T.PlaneCrash.C02.jpg More pics at link.

Wow. I grew up in Duluth and am pretty sure I know where that house is. To add…those trees are about to pop into some amazing fall colors. Love living up here and the scenery that goes with it. ___________________________ All it takes...is all you got. ____________________________ For those who have fought for it, Freedom has a flavor the protected will never know ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ

From the extent of the damage he flew under the power lines with power. ____________________________ Eeewwww, don't touch it! Here, poke at it with this stick.

I just took a look at a few details. The crash happened just a few minutes before midnight. The weather all around that time was 200’ overcast, not to be taken lightly. Yes it’s early, I wonder about the qualifications of the pilot & recency of experience. They only got 1.5 miles or so from the airport, after taking off. Times like this, pass the pilot a few beers. OBTW, the pictures of the damaged house, show much better weather, likely the next day.

seems unlikely it powered into the house from under those power lines but anything is possible I suppose. "Practice like you want to play in the game"

I think they hit the lines (which got fixed quickly). From the article: "Neighbors quickly responded to the scene and warned the Hoffmans not to move yet as there were live power lines around the home...The crash apparently caused extensive power outages in the area but Minnesota Power reported no customers without power at 8 a.m. Sunday."

Climbing turn into the soup on departure has killed a lot of good, smart, many houred pilots, and scores more of lesser ability. Often looks sort of like a high yo-yo and a turning descent into terrain when the data is rendered in 3D. Good point. I did not see any mention of whether the pilot was instrument rated and current. The article at the link provided in bcereuss's post immediately below indicates that the pilot held a commercial certificate, so he was instrument rated (unless he was one of those rare folks who hold commercial pilot certificates with restrictions. An example of this would be agricultural flying -- "crop dusting").This message has been edited. Last edited by: V-Tail, הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

Additional information For what it’s worth, the map seems to show that it flew straight from the runway angled to the southwest. The location of the house is actually about 3/4 of a mile to the west, and not in line with the runway as the map shows.
