My 3/4 HP Insinkerator Evolution Compact stopped turning after 9 years. When I flip the wall switch I hear a noise as if the motor is trying to start. I put my hand inside & felt the grinder turn as I turned with the "Jam-Buster" so it is not jammed. The reset does not help. Is the motor dead?
Any other suggestions?

Before giving up, there is a hex socket on the bottom of the unit that will accept an Allen wrench/key of the appropriate size. This is expressly to turn the grinding mechanism in case of a jam. I am not sure the knives moving in the interior grind space is indicative of anything. In the past, when I have had your problem happen to me, turning the motor 90 degrees with the Allen key has restored operation. It was more like there was a dead spot on the motor windings/commutator than an actual jam.

In fact, the last couple of disposers I have bought came with a key expressly for this purpose, check your junk drawer.

ETA: in re-reading the OP, it appears you have already tried this, in that case...never mind!

Try the above, if not give it a good few taps on the bottom. If it starts then the motor is starting to go bad.

If it won't hand crank, or restart after cranking might be time.

Just redid the kitchen, the Insinkerator was older and we replaced it with a new one from Lowes, went with the quiet 5/8 hp unit.

If you have to replace, they denote the sound level the units work at, for us a quiet model was better with an open floor plan.

Just leave something like a spoon or expensive knife down in the disposal. It will start right up!

Right on time . . . I'd call them up regardless. They may offer to ship you one one for a nominal price. Get the exact model number off of the info plate.

InSinkErator warrants to Customer that your InSinkErator Product will be free from defects in materials and workmanship, subject to the exclusions described below, for a period of eight (8) years

Thanks, I called they verified the disposal was bad. They are sending me a new one for $164 shipped & no sales tax. The best price I could find at Lowes, Ace, Amazon Etc was $253 shipped including tax
