I could be wrong but that sure looks like a single star on his uniform just above the model tank. So a BG and not Colonel?

Brigadier General (one star). Next rank above Colonel.

Photo is not sharp enough for my ancient eyes to make it out.

Thank you for all of the kind words and wishes. I've basically lurked here for the last few years. Was more active a few years ago when I had many SIGs. Just have 226 Navy now.

I am a Lieutenant Colonel, a black oak leaf on that uniform and the medal is a LOM. I've had a wonderful career and the Army was good to me.
Unfortunately, 28 years is the furthest I can go at this rank.

My branch is Logistics, but I came in as an Artilleryman for the first four years of my career. That is a M109A6 Paladan wood model but the unit I was in had M109A2s and this model was given to me to commemorate that time. We didn't have radios in the guns back then so we used flags for convoy commands during movement...but we were nuclear capable!

Congratulations on your retirement. From now on stay healthy and active. Find something you like to do and have fun. I retired in 1974 and still having fun when out of the VA Hospital.

Congratulations.

I hate to burst your bubble though. Traditionally, companies used to give gold watches to their retirees. But you get your own tank??? That's not going to be very practical plus the mileage alone is going to be horrible.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

Congrats on your retirement! We entered active duty around the same time. I did 22 years and retired 5 years ago. I'm sure you will agree it's a very different military now. I miss it occasionally but I'm glad to have started a new chapter in life. Enjoy it.
