Then tries to flee in his damaged ship but is forced back to port by S. Korean authorities. Nice work, Boris.

He must have left something in Busan and was going back for it.... Roll Eyes

"...the 370-foot Seagrand had arrived in Busan on Wednesday and set out for its home port of Vladivostok, Russia carrying nearly three million pounds of steel coils when the accident occurred."

The ship appears to me to be riding quite high in the water for having a 3M pound cargo on-board.

You're driving across a big bridge, you see a massive ship also headed for the bridge. Quick math tells you, it will hit a spot ahead of you, before you get there.

Do you...
- Brake and stop?
- Accelerate and pray?
- Adopt the 'fuck it' attitude and maintain course and speed?

It's a scene from the German Movie "Das Boot" if you've ever seen it. Drunk commander and all.

I don't know anything about those large ships - it looked like he might have had his engines cut - do they have a reverse? Didn't look like he was trying to slow the ship.

I'm no sailor either, but going from forward to reverse on those heavy ships is not easy since you end up moving the water directly below you but not actually the ship, at least for a while.

in other words, to change direction, you need something to "shove" against. In the water, there's nothing solid to shove against, since the water just kind of moves.

I think. Maybe Balzé Halzé or another forum expert can give a better explanation.

He was in full astern at the time of allision.

It's hard to imagine how the hell that ship ended up where it did. I assume he felt it better to hit head on than try and turn out where he likely would not have cleared the bridge.

From gCaptain:

Watch: Russian Cargo Ship Hits Bridge in Korea
February 28, 2019 by Mike Schuler

The Korean Coast Guard is investigation the allision of a Russian cargo ship with a bridge in southeastern Korea.

The Coast Guard said the 5,998-ton Seagrand sailed into the side of the Gwangan Bridge at around 4:20 p.m. before turning back to head in the opposite direction, The Korea Herald reported.

Authorities boarded the ship and discovered that the captain had a blood alcohol content of more than twice the legal limit. An official said it wasn’t yet clear if the Russian captain had been at the helm of the vessel at the time of the accident and therefore the captain has not been arrested.

According to reports, Seagrand had also hit a moored cruise ship about 40 minutes before hitting the bridge.

No major damage or pollution has been reported.

Yep, I'm having a hard time trying to believe it was a captain too drunk to see what he was doing... I need to go back and watch the video again and try to determine exactly when the ship was put in reverse....

Just hard for me to believe even a stumbling drunk could think they could make it under that bridge.

I travel to Sarasota, Florida via Tampa-St. Pete yearly, and have been doing so for over 35 years.

On May 9, 1980, The Sunshine Skyway Bridge out of Tampa was struck by a freighter, the Summit Venture, collapsing the bridge, killing 35.

The first time I crossed the waterway was just a few years later, and I wasn't aware of the incident. I remember driving on a parallel span of highway and seeing the lane to my right come to an abrupt end. Over the water.

"WTF?" I thought to myself. Years later, the destroyed portion of the bridge was converted into fishing piers on both sides of the water.

Whew!
