Came from the back in the last turn, maneuvered to the outside, sprinted like hell and won the race. 23-1 odds to win. Great race, jockey Jose Ortiz won yesterdays Oaks, became the 9th Derby winner to do both.

Yes, it was! That was amazing to watch.

A friend was over during the race and pointed out afterwards: none of the horses in the l-5 spots at the beginning of the race were in those spots at the end.*

* May not be entirely factual — I need to check -- but that was the statement and is at least “mostly true.”

As a question, because I don’t know any better: what does the trainer do? Who’s being trained — the jockey? the horse?

Every time I saw an interview with a trainer, I realized I just don’t know what that person actually does. None of them I saw looked particularly athletic…. Confused

1 slot is the most difficult to win from, you get crowded into the rail, just not enough room, that put Renegade back in the pack.

Biggest scare was Great White the 17 hand monster rearing up and tossing the jockey and then flipping on to his back. Lucky the Jockey wasn't killed or hurt, and the horse seemed ok.

Derby is one of the best events in the USA, even if dumbass Andy B had to make a political statement at the award ceremony, he's such a weasel....

Rich Strike in 2022 came out of the 21 post (actually post 20), which is actually last place.

He was 80-1 odds, passed them all.

Golden Tempo, Rich Strike, Mine That Bird, and Giacamo all did the same thing. These Thoroughbred horses are practically world class athletes. Rich Strike hit 44.2 mph!

There is a betting system that takes 2 to 3 horses with the highest odds, and make a Win, Place, and Show bet on them. And yesterday's Derby, the first and third place horses delivered a nice payoff on your two-dollar bet. About a $115 pay out on a $9 investment.

Amazing come from behind victory. I was looking forward to seeing how that monster horse Great White was going to run. I hate that they scratched him at the starting gate. You only get one shot at the derby and he missed it.

The race horse trainer is very similar to a boxing trainer- in charge of the horse's workouts, fitness, diet, healthcare, etc. Also has an overall say in the races entered, race strategy, choice of rider, manages the staff. As far as looking athletic, here's a pic of legendary trainer Angelo Dundee with his "horse".

I don't really know the rules. Since neither the jockey, nor the horse appeared to be hurt, I thought he would be allowed to get back on the horse and proceed to the gate.
Apparently, there's a stiff penalty for disruption.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

Great White was scratched from the 2026 Kentucky Derby just moments before the race after flipping over and tossing jockey Alex Achard while waiting to enter the starting gate. The horse was deemed unfit to race by veterinarians for safety reasons.
