So. This has been a bit of a struggle for a while now, and it mostly plagues us in the spring/summer/fall, but not the winter. There isn't any food stuck anywhere that I can find, and over the last couple years we've replaced the disposal, and now more recently the dishwasher itself. My brand new Kitchen Aid from Costco smells like a hobo's 8month old t-shirt.

What the hell.

We've tried Cascade Boil Out, all the flushing suggestions, vinegar, bleach, frickin napalm. (Well almost) We're on city water supply, and city drainage. There are no clogs or backups, and the drain has the loop/high spot for keeping the backflow from going back into the dishwasher. Everything is "professionally" installed and I've watched a million hours on YouTube about these things... I feel like anyway.

Stuff just comes out smelling nasty, and here's the stuff we've replaced/tried:
- Supply line
- drain line
- garbage disposer
- soaps / detergents
- new dishwasher

Seems like we're cursed.

Does anyone have anything else to try, or any suggestions? Bringing a nice cold glass of Raspberry Ice Crystal Light to my mouth on a hot day is spoiled by some ass funk from the depths of hades that seems to be stuck onto my glasses when they come out of any major appliance I install into my dishwasher hole in the kitchen. Do you know what temp your water is in the washer?
Thermoworks has a dish thermometer that registers the top temp. of your washer. It's not cheap but I mention it as something to put on your check list in solving your problem.
The base question would be, "Is your washer hot enough to sanitize?"

I get drain smells sometimes in the sink that I address w/ vinegar and arm&Hammer but that's w/o the benefit of high heat.

Have you cleaned the filter? Took me a couple of years to figure out dishwashers have filters that need to be cleaned.

Where is the drain tied into the sewer? In other words, if it's downstream of the p-trap you could be getting sewer gas into it. Sewer gas smells like the southern end of a north bound mule.

Ours does that occasionally. My wife's tried everything. Nothing works. It just seems to disappear on its own.

We're on well & septic.

Does the drain line have the high loop?

Without that, you’ll get dirty water going back all over your dishes.

Ours does, if you were responding to me.

I was responding more to the OP

I think you can get drain gas and dirty water stagnating in the machine if this isn’t set up properly.

Ours will too unless we run it almost every day.

Two things you might try.

Run the hot water tap in the sink until it gets hot right before starting the washer so you get hot water to it right at start up. Yes, most or all have their own heating element but it can't hurt and it might help.

Run it more often with smaller loads.
I learned this by chance when my wife was down after knee surgery for a couple months. She had always packed it full only running it every 2 or 3 days and when very full, she constantly complained about some odor. When I took over I started running it almost every day... lighter loads. Just like magic... any malodors gone!

I still have to stay on her when I see her loading it in the evening... Don't just shut it up RUN IT!

If yours is set up like mine, the wastewater from the dishwasher feeds into the garbage disposal. The water coming out of the dishwasher overwhelms the capacity of the drainpipes and leaves some dirty water in the pipes and disposer. When the dishwasher empties, we see some water backing up into the sink drain. It helps to run the disposer and hot water through the drain when the dishwasher is empty to flush the nasty stuff out.

Mine seems to do this if I don't remove the dishes immediately after the cycle finishes. If I take them out right away, they're fine. If I let them sit a day or two, they smell awful. I tried just about every solution I could find, but nothing ever seemed to help. It's a pain in the ass, but it's sure helped me make sure I stay on top of it.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

Does the hot water from your water heater reek? If it’s an electric water heater, and it does, you may need to replace the anode.
