Looking for a bike mainly to ride with my boys and pull a trailer but we also have some decent MTB trails close by I would not mind to hit from time to time. Just looking for an entry level bike really and would like to be around $500. The Pitch 27.5 has hydraulic brakes which seems to be a nice upgrade and runs about $520. I have looked on the local used market and not much as I need an XL frame and most stuff seems to be beat pretty good. The shop I like here fits you, assembles the bike, and provides maintenance for 2 years when buying new but only carries Specialized. My road bike is a Specialized and I have been very happy with it. Curious on folks thoughts on the Pitch? This message has been edited. Last edited by: Black92LX, ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. Don't know anything about the Pitch in particular, but I had a Specialized hybrid for awhile. It was a cross between a mountain bike and a road bike. Used it for when my itch saw a logging road and I wanted to explore it! Worked great for my use!! If I remember correctly, the tire width was 1-1/4".

Just for the hell of it |
I really suggest you ride any new bike special ones with the bigger tires if you did any real riding with the older smaller tires. I used to do a lot of mountain biking. Still have my old Gary Fisher around. Last year I was at an outdoor event that had a bike outfitter there. Had a chance to ride a top of the line mountain bike on a course. I felt like I couldn't control those big tires. I'm sure I would get used to it but coming from years of riding the older smaller tires to trying to ride the newer 29" tires was a mess. _____________________________________ Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn. My bike snobbery will likely show below, but trying to help: I’d keep watching the used market... EBay, TheProsCloset, your local Facebook marketplace (probably also a regional bike specific group on Facebook). Or go talk to your local shop and say ‘I have $500.’ You may be surprised on some close outs, especially in a slower moving XL frame. I understand wanting to stick with Specialized but $500 doesn’t get you much bike (new) these days and the Pitch basically has the lowest tier parts on it from Shimano. The entry level bikes from major brands tend to be garbage with a known sticker on it. It’ll ride, but won’t be very enjoyable if you don’t want to, or aren’t able to, do regular maintenance. Wouldn’t even be worth upgrading in the future in my opinion should you get more into riding. Tech is WAY behind on these. Entertain something from bikes direct in this price range. You’ll get a lot more bike for the money: http://www.bikesdirect.com/pro...-mountain-bikes.html

I don't have experience with the brand but after getting the wife a indoor trainer. I think I am going to buy myself an REI co-op hardtail mountain bike. ------------------------------ Smart is not something you are but something you get. Chi Chi, get the yayo

I’m 5’8”. I have a 27.5 and a 29 er. I noticed the 29. My bike dealer was adamant I wouldn’t. I would get used to it. He is also over 6 foot tall. I noticed it on trails. Still do. The 27.5? Perfect. For me all the advantages never noticed any downside. Besides which do they even make newer bikes with the 26 option? I thought they were pretty much DOA. My Specialized is a Camber 27.5 so I can’t help out but good luck. Love my Specialized.

My biggest problem is I have zero clue what I am comparing. I don’t know good hardware from old crap. The shop stocks very few XLs so they have no closeouts for me. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have. Looks like if I bump my budget to $700 I can be in a Pitch or Rockhopper Comp. From all I can tell aside from a $50 price difference the Pitch is a 27.5 and the Rockhopper is a 29. I’ll head down to the shop tomorrow and get the low down on the two since I have no clue what much of the specs mean. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. Ride them both. I let my guy talk me into a 29er. He said a week in I would be sold. Well, I’m not. I turned that bike into a project. For riding on paths or streets it’s great. I don’t like in tight stuff. My 27.5 is a dream. On my mtb’s now I prefer a single chain ring. I don’t feel like I’ve lost much and I much prefer the simplicity. I have also become a huge fan of the dropper post. It was an afterthought at purchase that quickly became one of my favorite features. Also by single chain ring that frees up the other side for the dropper post control. Getting way low on downhills is very confidence inspiring. It’s also nice to stop and drink with the post bottomed out and you are flat footed astride the bike. Not a huge deal but nice. Others can comment better on component levels.

I ended up getting the Rockhopper Comp. They were able to order me a 2019 Closeout so I was right at $700 after tax. $130 more than any of the others and the Comp has better components than the Pitch or the Rockhopper Sport. I am 6’2” have never ridden mountain bikes before only road bikes so the 29” seemed just fine too me. Hopefully it will be in next week before my days off. I have a Suunto watch so I ordered the Suunto bike computer. The shop will fit the bike to me, setup the computer, and make sure everything is good to go for the trailer. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. Congrats on the new ride. I meant to reply earlier, didn't get a chance. My son and I both bought the Pitch 27.5. Very happy with them. Got a good deal and military discount. We plan on doing some long distance riding on the Great Allegheny Passage this summer. ----------------- I apologize now...

Oh stewardess, I speak jive. |
Cool. In the past I've owned/put many miles on an old Rockhopper and and old Stumpjumper.

I would have got the Pitch as I am pretty sure it would have suited my needs just fine. But the Rockhopper Comp was on close out. So for $130 for better components all around kind of a no brainer. Had it not been on close out I certainly would have gotten the pitch because it would have been like $200 more than I paid. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad.
