Bart: Alright, we'll settle this like men, with our fists.
Hedley Lamarr: Sorry, I just remembered . . . I am armed.

The only people that should ever get reparations are those that were actually harmed

Oh wait…they’re all dead

Problem solved.

Who do I send my bill to for 3% of the savings?

So….will the descendants of black slave owners have to pay too? I bet they leave that part out

Exactly my stance.

Reparations to any person that was actually a slave, or their direct child(ren). Not any other descendant(s).

Paid by any person that was actually a slave owner, or their direct child(ren). Not any other descendant(s).

The cutoff date of being born to a slave being the last day on 1865, to account for those that the Emancipation Proclamation failed to be realized until the ratification of the 13th Amendment.

No one else, from either side, can be considered "injured from enslavement", nor "responsible for enslavement".

100% undeniable and and proven without a doubt, evidence to support, required.

That's it.

If it passes and they get their (our) money, guess what? We'll still be racists. I wonder what they'll want then.

It is long past time for a Convention of States. The Founding Fathers gave us this tool to fix an out of control government and we need to use it.

Oh for the days when North Fulton County was Milton County on the northside of Atlanta and the real Fulton County was down around College Park and dare I say Hartsfield airport (without the Jackson).

The northside of Fulton continues to carry the slop bucket for the whole county. I was so glad I grew up in Cobb back before Atlanta boomed but if this reparation nonsense actually catches on in Fulton it wouldnt be long before the "now" purple Cobb County would end up dealing with it.

Reparations today are based in collective condemnation. Collective condemnation is foundational in genocide. If we legitimize collective condemnation we set the table for eventual genocide. In this republic, justice is individual. Reparations cannot be allowed on principle.

Shouldn’t the money to pay for reparations come from the African tribes that sold their fellow Africans into slavery? Confused

If we accept the 'logic' of paying for these reparations then the most 'logical' conclusion is they need to negotiate with the Native Americans 'we' stole the entire continent from.......

I wonder if any Cherokees will show up at that discussion?

Here's a solution...Well maybe not, but here goes:

They should put a question on the State Income Tax form asking whether people would like to pay a HIGHER Tax Rate on their personal Income in order to fund 'reparations' payments for those with the same skin color as those that were slaves OVER ONE HUNDRED-FIFTY YEARS AGO! Somehow I suspect the numbers signing up for the higher/optional tax rate would be lackluster!

Historical comparison: For about 20 years, those subject to the Massachusetts Income Tax (includes non-residents working in Mass) have had the option/opportunity to pay a higher state income tax rate. All you needed to do was to check a box on your return and you could voluntarily pay the higher tax rate...There were VERY Few takers! I wonder why... Roll Eyes

Compensation is for quantifiable harms done. How much worse off is a person than had the bad thing not been done?

A person today who is a descendant of a slave has a certain economic situation and, importantly, a certain economic opportunity. They have a certain standard of living, quality of food, housing, and health care. Free education, etc.

Had their ancestor remained in Africa, and ignoring that the person today would not actually be alive had slavery not happened, what is the likely economic and standard of living they would have were they in Africa today?

Chances are they are vastly better off being a modern American than a modern African. Thus they have not suffered harm for their ancestor being a slave, they have benefitted from it!

Part 2:

While the descendant of a slave has benefitted, the slave absolutely suffered in every way.

We might compute a fair wage for the typical labors which non-slaves were paid, and look at what the typical inheritance passed down was. That is, how much did a non-slave earn doing similar work, and how much was passed to their heirs.

I expect the wages were very low and the heirs got pretty much nothing. Looking at my lilly white European immigrant ancestors' records, they passed down things like a couple of cows or a couple pieces of furniture.

Dilute the estate by a half dozen or more generations, and today's descendant of a slave would get next to nothing.

I do wonder how much my Union soldier ancestors should get for their sacrifices?

None of my ancestors lived in this country at the time except one and he died serving in the Union Army.
I didn't live south of the Mason Dixon Line until about a hundred and ten years after the civil War ended.

We all know full well this is never going to happen, it's all BS pandering at election time as usual.

Reparations would collapse our country and the level of fraud would make all the Covid bailouts seem like child's play. It's never going to happen no matter how much they talk about it.
