The US needs to stop thinking like this. They're kicking our butts in many areas and dismissing them is done at our peril.

You did notice the smiley in creslin's post, yes? Smile

Maybe. Their quality control standards have hurt them and will for at least a generation. Any butt kicking will be temporary if this continues.

Maybe you shouldn't build a project like this where the ground is unstable?
Just a suggestion.

This topic is only tangentially related to the theme of Bridge Over The river Kwai, but that jumped into my head unbidden and won't leave so,

Here it is:

Maybe they can turn the end of the bridge into a bungee jumping operation? Big Grin

Looks like a slope failure. The bridge was along for the ride.

Another one for my lecture series on geotechnical failures.

When they steal our IP for quality, they can make a good product. But left to their own devices, the are overrun by corruption and culture. High quality is not generally aligned with their interest in profit. They generally don't care about making a good product, just a good profit. The exception may be craftsman / artisans, including those in artistic movies. One of my favorites is still King of Masks.

In bridge you bid no Trump at your peril.

I don't play bridge, but I assume this is clever word play?

Just make sure the cord is not made in China. That’s all, folks. Razz

This is a snippet of a twitter post by a gent who I've found credible. He taught as a college professor in China for 10 years. Link to the whole post below the quote.....

So with my architect wife who has worked in China and the US I can actually tell you what is happening here and why this matters. You can actually tell pretty easily two things in the video: a) there are not enough anchoring pylons in the mountain and b) the pylons do not go deep enough and c) they are not strong enough to withstand the lateral movement of this type of failure. These matter because those would prevent exactly this type of scenario.

Exactly. Where do people think they go to school for engineering. It’s not 1980 anymore.

Maybe so, but they've got enough people they'll certainly be able to replace him with someone who is now more motivated to do it right.

I'm with PGT on this. It's easy to make fun of China, but we need to stop underestimating them. They have a lot of people, a lot of resources, and massive engineering and manufacturing capacity. They may lack our individualism and creativity, but they don't need it because they've got access to all the intellectual property that we come up with and for some reason can't seem to protect.

Their stuff doesn't have to be better than ours, it just has to be good enough and they have to be able to make enough of it. We didn't win WWII by having better tech than the Germans...we did it by making more stuff than them, keeping the Soviets supplied, and bleeding them to death on two fronts.

Excellent post. I’ve thought for years the US military has been to enamored with the latest and greatest tech toy. Personally, I think the F-35 and the USS Ford are prime examples. The F-22 is still a better plane but we had to have the jack of all trades master of none in the F-35. And carriers, they are the battleships of 1941.
