They get fired, or they quit.

We had two ex military guys go thru the 5 week Corrections Academy, then on probation get assigned at a cell block, see an inmate brawl break out, refuse to join us in breaking up the fight, then both quit the next day.

We told them that part of their job requirement was preventing inmates from killing each other.
