Then renting is the right move. You want something nice, but will never use it again. You don't want to look cheap, but why waste money on something nice that will just gather dust in a closet?

It may be an assumption, but my bet is that your son and/or his groomsmen may have picked a place to rent their tuxedos from. If so, my suggestion would be to check with them and see if the tux place rents suits. It might well be that if so, the suit styles/colors might be well coordinated (match? contrast?) with the tuxes the groom/groomsmen will be wearing.

If the tux place doesn't rent suits, my next suggestion would be to ask them to recommend someone nearby who does.

I hadn't bought a suit in years but needed to attend a wedding. I wore dress uniforms in the service but after retiring, I didn't know where start. I looked at Men's Wearhouse and Jos A. Bank but ultimately ended up at Brooks Brothers. Their personnel took their time and used their experience to choose the right fit, the color, and the accessories (ties, shirts, shoes, etc). Once I figured out my sizing and they did the tailoring, it was much easier to know what I wanted. I felt so good afterward that I've bought a few more suits since. I've ended up wearing them at least a dozen times; I never have to worry that I won't have the right thing to wear.

Buying a well-tailored suit will make you feel more comfortable and have a positive reaction to those around you. Take your time checking local stores as well as Macy's, MW, J. Banks, or Brooks Brothers outlets.

Some have said to rent a suit. I disagree, it will not fit and the day you pick it up will be far too late to have anything done about it.

Quick update. My wife and I stopped in at the local Dillards today and I was approached by a a guy who exclusively sells men’s suits, ties, etc. I wasn’t really shopping for a suit yet, but I saw “Hart, Schaffner, and Marx” above a rack of suits and thought I would just see what they have and what they cost.

He measured me and I tried on four suit jackets. I really liked a H, S, and M in navy with a lighter blue pinstripe. I also tried on a Daniel Cremieux in what he called “olive.” Didn’t really look that color to me, I saw blue in it, but held up against a navy blue you can see a dark green tone. Nice suits, both on hold for a few days. Both on sale. Substantial savings. The H,S,&M had a price of $675 on it discounted to about $250. The Cremieux was somewhere around $750 and priced at $280.

I guess if I really wanted to see a bunch of suits, I should go down to one of the big malls in suburban Denver. The salesman said their men’s suits cover an area comparable to that for ALL the menswear in Cheyenne. I believe he said there was a Dillards outlet in the Springs too.

I’ve got direction and I think I’ll pull the trigger on something pretty soon. Thanks for the input.

I used to wear a suit to work every day. Now, I can't remember the last time I wore one; it has to be more than twenty years.

I keep thinking I should get one for the maybe half dozen times I might need one: grandsons graduation soon, one from medical school, one from law school. Maybe couple weddings (same grandsons). And I won't see it myself, but I should probably look nice for my funeral. Wink

When you are wintering in Arizona make time to visit Nordstrom,
Some people dislike wearing suits, most of the time because they are never very comfortable.

Suits can be tailored to fit you comfortably,
Nordstrom has the ability to make you enjoy wearing a suit, and feeling good while doing it.

I too like v-tail wore suits every day until I retired. My job had me traveling almost weekly, business lunches, travel meals, not good for the body. I slowly got up to a size 40. Finally changed my eating habits and finished off at a 34/36 size suits. I retired 12 years ago and kept one size 40 and one size 34/36. Fortunately I’m still a 34/36 so after reading this I donated the size 40 suit since I have not worn either since retirement.

Five years ago my oldest daughter remarried, first husband had passed, and I ended up renting a suit where the guys got their tuxedos. The company matched up my suit to compliment the wedding parties. Others have said don’t rent because they won’t fit you well but for me that was not the case. Because I exercise regularly, the pants were from a size 36 suit and the jacket was from a size 42 suit. They tapered the waist area of the coat down and I had a comfortable across the shoulders fit. If I had bought a suit it would have been a size 42. Jacket taper would have been done the same but 42 pants down to 36 would have the back pockets touching each other.

I worked in three very comfortable suits for many years.

They were comfortable to wear all day. On occasion I miss wearing a suit and tie.

24 years ago they were $1,600.00

I can't begin to imagine what they are costing now.
+ a nice tie or two
+ a nice dress belt.
+ a $60.00 Dress shirt.
+ some nice comfortable shoes

My response for the suits needed should complement the rest of the wedding party..do not want to stand out like a sore thumb..... But do not skimp on the footwear... If possible you might find some good solid footwear that you possibly had time to break-in prior to the day of the festivities.. Want to be comfortable and not dreading to be up and moving around with ill-fitting footwear.................. drill sgt.

Good advice, Sergeant, and one that I’ve been contemplating. I have a pair of black, Johnston Murphy loafers that I have barely worn. I think they’re too low and slipper-like. I could also go toward black, dress, western boots, but honestly although I wore boots all my life, that doesn’t feel like the way to go either—unless I bought a brand new pair with a walking heel and fashionable square toes. I don’t know.

Bendable, you’re right. I figured on a new, quality dress shirt, and at least one other, advocated for spending some money on a good tie (or two). Hadn’t even considered a new belt. Cha-ching! Better buy a suit on sale.
