My advice would be to skip Georgia. Traffic is awful and Atlanta traffic is worse than awful unless you are driving through it overnight. Lots of cops sit on the entrance ramps looking for revenue.
Stay on I-65 from Bowling Green, KY through Nashville, TN (lots of cool stops there if you like food, music and guitars) and go to Montgomery, AL. From Montgomery, catch US 231 south to I-10 in Florida. Take the panhandle to I-75 south to the turnpike to Orlando.
Depending on where you're trying to end up in Orlando, you might want to skip the turnpike and keep on I-75 south to SR 50 east. It will avoid tolls and be a much more peaceful drive versus Mad Max on the turnpike.
That's the route I took home last year when I returned to Chicago from Orlando. Going there I took I75 through Atlanta. Never again. The only downside if there is one with this route is that 231 is not an Interstate but instead a two lane country road in each direction from I10 until you are able to get on I65. But it's flows pretty good and you will not lose too much time going that route. |

| “Never again” It’s been 25 years since I’ve dealt with the traffic in Chicago and the surrounding ‘burbs. Has the traffic there improved since? |

| It's bad of course especially during rush hour but I've never experienced the heavy traffic like what I experienced driving through Atlanta. |

Oh there is worse, I-95 north of Richmond thru D.C. almost the whole way to NYC. I used to go up 81 to avoid that mess. Atlanta used to be a case of timing and direction, but it has deteriorated, and it is getting worse and worse. If I did not have elderly family here, I would not be here. |

Savor the limelight
| I just remember driving from the office in the Merc to clients out in Schaumburg and Barrington and average 20mph hour on the freeway. Same on the way back in the evening.
My problem with Atlanta is that’s just in the wrong place no matter which direction I’m coming from. Heading north, I hit it during afternoon rush hour. If I leave later, I can either stop before Atlanta and get stuck in morning rush hour the next day, or push through and stop in Dalton at 10pm which is a long day driving. Same heading back home. |
