Road trip advice needed (hurricane related?)

Long story short, heading up to Chicago from Orlando to bring the wife home. Her mom is really sick and could use some help.

Plan is to leaving late Friday or early Saturday between 2300-0100.

Our typical route is:

75 north to Chattanooga
24 west to Nashville
65 north through Indiana to 80 to Chicago

I'm just wondering with our timing and the hurricane if we're far enough inland to avoid things such as interstate parking lots, gas shortages, etc.

If so, my plan would be to push a little further west on 24 to 57 and then head north.

I will have a hitch rack with about 7 gallons of fuel to extend our range if need be. Will have protection as well.

Thoughts?

In my opinion, you should be fine with your route. That said, my crystall ball gets cloudy sometimes.

I was suprised Irma impacted points like Atlanta as much as it did.

If you want guaranteed no hassles, it might make sense to push further west before heading north.

All of your potential problems will be in east GA. By the time you hit Chattanooga, rain would be your only concern if you timed it bad. Beyond that, no concerns of running out of fuel, etc

IIRC, with an out of state permit you can carry concealed within your vehicle. I'll let the IL residents provide details.

If the storm turns SW as some models predict it could be wise to move west.

You could take 75 to 10 West to Alabama 167 up to 65 North and avoid GA, TN area altogether, Google shows the trip at 18 hrs 42 Min and 1242 miles vs 17 h 32 min going up through GA.

I'd make my decision based on the weather at time of departure and expected path of the storm as to the preferred route.

Perception

I live on 24 near Nashville. I don't expect us to be affected at all. No rain is in the forecast until next Tuesday, although no one really knows how this will go at the moment so that's subject to change. Construction along that route seems to be less than usual in the TN/KY area right now too!
