It looks neat but for me, that would stop after having to take/put on the top all the time, unless it was just a fair weather car.

It looks like the rear seats are all weather but it won’t matter because they will add 2 more doors and make it too similar to every other 4 door SUV out there.

That's interesting. I wonder if it's related to the rollover issues seen with short wheelbase issues a bunch of years ago.

It's government run amok, Cafe Standards with an insane formula involving a vehicle's shadow or footprint or some such mumbo jumbo. Bottom line, short wheelbase trucks aren't happening.

Please explain Jeeps to me then...Or is it dependent on what the manufacturer calls it, because the Jeep Wrangler is NO different than any other truck, except for the short(er) wheelbase is it not?

There you go, just take a peek and see what we're up against.

I found the vid, not that much more helpful than the article.

The comparison to a Wrangler is a fair point. If the Surf can occupy that same territory, then it'd be good-to-go. Considering it's apparent lack of a fully-enclosed cab, it may fit in that same niche.

I haven't read or watched the stuff shared by Ripley and lyman, but it does seem rather obvious that all the Surf would have to do is conform to the same criteria that enables the Wrangler, and it'd be OK.

Apparently the gov't/EPA defines a truck as a vehicle which is primarily designed/intended to transport property or equipment. A Jeep Wrangler is seemingly classified as an SUV. Seems that it'd be difficult to argue that the Surf's primary design intent is the transportation of property and equipment, considering it's rear cargo area is so small.

There's likely other finer points revealed in those videos and articles previously shared.

The Jeep Gladiator falling victim to truck classification implies that the presence of an open-air truck bed, from which the main passenger compartment is isolated, of any size will get a truck classification.

It definitely has a fully enclosed cab similar to the wrangler and is removable just like the wrangler.

Link to article that discusses the 3D printed roof on this concept vehicle.

If Jeep can make two door Jeeps Toyota can make this. Whether they will be bold enough to actually do it is another story.

Is it just me? Surely I can't be the only one that looks at these pics of the Surf and thinks 'Ken & Barbie' edition. Razz

I meant it lacks a dedicated, fully-enclosed cab that is isolated from the remainder of the vehicle (cargo area).

KSGM, how is this concept any different from a removable top Bronco or Jeep 2 door?

nhraracecraft, I don’t see that at all…..it’s not pink and/or retarded looking. I see more of an homage to this vehicle that has always been one of my favorite 4wd creations.

It's not. Well, It kind of is, since it has the weird sorta-cab thing on the front.

I originally mentioned the odd truck criteria, because I thought it may affect the Surf prototype. The more we discussed it, it became apparent that it would be treated the same as the vehicles you mentioned.

Well, not discounting the homage to very capable 4WD deserving of it's cult following...But there's the purpley blue color with the cresting wave in a groovy blue, and the light blue wave graphics on the front fenders, plus the 'Turbo' lettering on doors in a somewhat girly font. Oh, and the surf boards...Sooo, 'Ken & Barbie' all the way! I can't unsee it! Wink

But don't the rear seats help avoid the Chicken Tax problem?

The only way this doesn’t happen is because Toyota isn’t brave enough to take a risk and make a true retro homage to the 1980’s and one of their best vehicles ever made.

If I had to bet on this companies move I’d say they pass on this opportunity. This is the same retarded/fagtastic company that thought a BMW Z4 auto only was a proper successor to the mighty Supra. What a shit tactic way to say we cannot make high performance without BMW’s retarded help. Fuck that. BMW sucks.

I hope they prove me wrong. I really do.

Toyota isn’t in the fun. They have continued to make otherwise known reliable platforms more and more complicated and LARGER. The tunes for engine and transmission management lean toward lugging the engine vs pleasant to drive. The FJ was similar in size to this concept truck and even that was taken from us.

I just wish they'd offer something 4 wheel drive with a manual transmission in that dark blue. That's my color, but I don't need or want a 4runner or a rav4.

That is a pretty good looking concept. Sans graphics and pink accents, I'd drive it daily.

A Perpetual Disappointment...
