Gas grill griddle insert...Steelmade, Grill Grates or a Weber insert? Suggestions, experiences? Login/Join

I have a Weber E-610, propane six burner. I would like a griddle but don't want another unit on the patio, also no space for one. Looking around I see...

Steelmade makes a stand alone griddle that can be placed on top of the existing grates of the grill. So I can use it when I want and then store it for using the grill as normal. I usually grill 2-4 times a week. USA made all steel.

Grill Grates makes a flat section that can be placed on top of their grates or inter-connected with their grates. Their grates replace the Weber grates. Which I have also considered since the Weber cast ones only last about 2yrs then rust out. Grill Grates are aluminum so no rusting. USA made.

Weber has their version that sits on top of Weber grates. The design though seems to be off. No ability to have a grease drip tray under the griddle. Seems it would tend to make a nice fire if grease gets into grill. And it has gaps on side and vent holes across front that users have said get the edges of grill in those areas extremely hot.

So anyone have any of these and have thoughts on use?

Thanks.

I use a pair of Lodge reversible griddles on my gas grill.

I have this 15x12, too, which works great for grilling vegetables:

Their Pro-Grid has better handles:

God bless America.

GrillGrates are awesome, but not for a true griddle. The holes will let small/wet stuff drip straight down. I keep 2 of 5 sections flipped to the 'griddle' side for searing burgers & such.

I have a lodge 15" reversable that I will toss on if I'm doing something that will drip/fall through.

I have a 16" cast iron skillet that the handles sit on the grate-shelf of my Big Steel Keg & leaves 1/2" around for airflow. Works nicely as well, but too big for my gas grill.

GrillGrates makes a solid flat "grate" no holes. Also call it a defroster plate. It can be placed on or in line with the reg grates. It has no provisions for a grease catch/pan. I talked to Grill Grates and they suggest no heavy grease items, so no bacon cooking. Which is one of the things I want to do. They also said on the holes on the flip side of the grates that you could do eggs since they will solidify quick enough as not to run through the holes. But again no to bacon on the flat hole side. And of course you couldn't do stir fry especially rice with the holes.

The lodge items can work but I'd like a larger cooking area.
