Twenty-five years ago, October 3, 1993, Operation Gothic Serpent was launched to capture Somali warlord Mohammed Farah Aideed. Two MH-60 helicopters were shot down in the streets of Mogadishu. Task Force Ranger mounted a rescue operation. They more than held their own as the streets were overrun with a Somali mob. 17 men were KIA and 106 wounded.

I have two videos. One is a short clip from the movie, Black Hawk Down, the other is a tribute released this morning from USSOCOM—it’s on Twitter and FB, but not on YT

One of my top five movies. Was watching it just two days ago. Incredible story of courage and fortitude.

All those injuries and deaths due to an incompetent CiC. Thanks Billy BJ.

I think we all recognize Clinton’s responsibility; I just hope this thread isn’t about that asshole.

I have always found the movie hard to watch. Not sure I have ever watched it start to finish.

I am not sure but think we may have a member or maybe more that were there.

God bless them all.

Fair enough; I can take the post down if you wish.

Nah, that’s alright, it needed to be said.

Here's what this is really about:

and 106 more wounded

ETA:
If you total the number killed in the Battle of Mogadishu, the number is 19, not 17. The “17” in the first post came from USSOCOM. Two of those killed were from the 10th Mountain. Perhaps in honoring those attached to USSOCOM, they left off the two men killed from 10th Mountain. That’s regrettable. There were 19 killed.

And the same president who authorized that action was the same one who refused to allow us to go after the ones who planned the attack on the USS Cole and refused to allow us to defend the first ship on-site to support even when the same type little boats would do the same type run on us (pilot of the little boat standing on the bow after turning the boat directly at us). Our SpecOps guys were not allowed to follow and engage the bad guys into Yemen nor were we allowed to unpin our .50 cals from the safe position (pointed at the sky).

Thanks TMats.

Understood; I’ve been at the small area on base/McDill where USSOCOM holds their ceremonies many times. If I was in Tampa today, I’d head over and participate. Thanks for posting.
