Can I fly to NJ with a gun and no NJ FOID?

Rick LeeCan I fly to NJ with a gun and no NJ FOID?
I always bring a P365 with me on business trips, have to go to TN, IN, PA and NJ soon, all one trip. I have to fly to Newark from Pittsburgh, but am flying home to AZ from Philly. I have heard of a case of someone whose flight was diverted to Newark and he was arrested when he went to collect his luggage. I could mail the gun home to myself before flying to NJ. But does the airline alert local police of a gun in checked luggage? I've never had an issue anywhere, but know NJ is kind of silly about guns.

Rick LeeNo. My folks are picking me up, I'll stay there for a few days and then fly home from PHL. Obviously, I'd keep the gun locked in its case the whole time.

hrcjonNope not a chance staying for a few days.

ChowserI'd just avoid NJ if at all possible. You never know what kind of cop you'd run into.
The plan was to fly into JFK with my gun in checked luggage. Collect my luggage and uber into NJ, buy the car and drive it back. Even carrying under LEOSA and am still active, I decided it wasn't worth the hassle or risk. Especially since my daughter would be coming with me. I ended up finding a car in PA, so we flew into Philly and bought the car. No issues with our guns. She's an Ohio permit holder.

sourdough44Since you’re asking, there’s another element to think about. Yeah I know about being judged by 12 over carried by 6.
Remember Micheal Penny, subway Good Samaritan. When in a restrictive State or area, what happens should you ever use or ‘brandish’ that handgun?
I just throw up the thought of using other mitigation techniques to lower the likelihood of the unpleasant interaction. Those techniques can vary depending of particulars, though they start with time of day & location.
OK, tell me I need to take testosterone supplements.

NontypicalFly into and out of Philly.

calugoI would not under any circumstances fly into NJ with a firearm, if you can fly into Newark you can fly into Philly and avoid any risk of being hassled by NJ law enforcement. It's just not worth the risk because NJ and NY simply ignore federal law regarding the transport of firearms so while you might eventually win in court you still would have been arrested, spent time in jail, went through the hassle and expense of navigating the legal system which all could be avoided by simply avoiding flying into NJ.

Don't do it.
There was a time when your checked bag would pop out on the carousel with no one the wiser that a gun was checked inside it. Now though, at least with Delta, the bag must be picked up specially in the baggage office upon arrival, and the agents working in the baggage office will know you're picking up your bag because there is a firearm inside. All it would take for your day to go to shit is one of those agents giving the local authorities a heads up, and I would put it at least at 50/50 that one would do just that.
As others said, fly into and out of Philadelphia if you're bringing a firearm.

Rick LeeFlying into Philly isn't an option. Flight is already booked and I need to go to Newark to coincide with other relatives' arrivals and to keep my mom from having to drive all over. Again, gun wouldn't be coming out of the case once I check my luggage in Pittsburgh. It's just that I really need it for the previous week in IN. Probably just gonna have to mail it home to myself. And I guess I need to read up on how to do that too.

Negative. It is illegal for non-FFL holders to mail a handgun via USPS.

Fly-SigIt sounds like NJ is a destination, which means federal protections while in transit do not apply. You would have to be in compliance with NJ laws for possessing the firearm, magazines, and type of ammo.
Newark is the least friendly airport for passengers that I have been through. I would not expect anyone to offer fairness.

But what I'm wondering is whether authorities in NJ are at all alerted when an inbound flight has a checked firearm. I've done it a few times to/from Chicago O'Hare and Midway, even before IL lightened up, plenty times in other gun-unfriendly states. Never had an issue.

GeorgeairHeck, with the stories we've seen I'd be worried about flying anywhere near NJ or NYC for fear of an unplanned diversion and being forced to pick up my luggage for a rebook. Wasn't there a couple stories where that happened and people ended up under arrest?

Per UPS website:
"UPS accepts packages containing Firearm Products for shipment only as a contractual service and only from Shippers who are licensed importers, licensed manufacturers, licensed dealers, or licensed collectors (as defined in Title 18, Chapter 44 of the United States Code) to authorized recipients, as outlined in an approved UPS agreement for the transportation of Firearm Products."
Per FedEx website:
"Shippers that do not hold an FFL are not eligible to obtain approval and are prohibited from shipping firearms with FedEx."

Presumably the OP is using the term 'mail it' loosely here. Shipping it via an FFL to an FFL in his home state would be a viable (AND advisable!) solution here.
As the OP indicates his plans are to visit w/ relatives 'for a few days', it's best to avoid bringing a handgun to New Jermany all together!

PASigDo not take a gun into the People’s Republik of New Jersey!
There was an incident a few years ago, where a woman from Philadelphia made a wrong turn and ended up in New Jersey, and she was completely legal in Pennsylvania with a concealed carry, but had it on her and got pulled over unfortunately and was arrested on the spot.

I really don't care what their rules are. I care about the law, and it's not illegal to ship by means other than USPS. It's not a transfer because I already own the gun. I understand that breaking their rules means they won't pay an insurance claim. But this is not an expensive gun and I have plenty more. I've shipped my guns out for work plenty of times without describing the contents as other than "machined metal parts."
