I asked this very same question about a year ago when we drove out there to get our camper and someone suggested eating at the Buckhorn Exchange and I was not disappointed with the food or the atmosphere. It had/has the very first liquor license issued in the state among a whole lot of interesting things to see in there.

Oh Em Gee, I forgot about this place. It was absolutely delicious! There's a magic museum across the street you can go to to and spend half an hour or so viewing the oddities.

If you are planning the trip to be some time soon, then drive up Pike's Peak.
See Mesa Verde.
Drive the Trail Ridge Road in the Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park.
Go down into a gold mine (the Molly Kathlene) at Cripple Creek.
Ride a zip line across the Royal Gorge.
Raft the Arkansas River thru the Royal Gorge. Class 5 rapids.
The aspen trees are just now starting to turn gold. There are many scenic drives to see the aspen tree.
I have lived here 30 years and still have a long list of places to see.

I will add that The Buckhorn Exchange is right at a light rail stop, 10th & Osage. I've eaten there several times. Great atmosphere, a little pricey, but worth it.

I like them both, but given a choice between The Buckhorn and The Fort, I'd go Buckhorn. My .02.
