I believe in the principle of Due Process |
“There was a time when a fool and his money were soon parted, but now it happens to everybody.” — Adlai E. Stevenson Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me. When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson "Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

It must be fairly old. Stevenson has been dead for more than 50 years. I don’t know the context in which the quote was made. Stevenson was quite the intellectual, very humorous, quick on his feet. I encountered this one on my morning perusal. One of his quips was, “Never run for office against a war hero!” Another....”Man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that sometimes he has to eat them.” Another.... “It's hard to lead a cavalry charge if you think you look funny on a horse.” Another.... “In America any boy may become President, and I suppose it's just one of the risks he takes.” More.... “A politician is a statesman who approaches every question with an open mouth.” Responding to criticism that he was too intellectual, that he talked over the heads of the voters, he tossed out a Latinism: Via ovum cranium difficilis est (The way of the egghead is hard). Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me. When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. Hah, great stuff sir. I will look him up in my future. I thought he was of the Bush 41 era. Thanks for the knowledge.

No, he ran against Eisenhower in 1952 and again in 1956. He lost, both times. הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

Hence, the second of the quotes above. Supposedly, a supporter called out to him, "Governor, you have the vote of every thinking person!" during one of his presidential campaigns. “Thanks, but I think I need a majority.” was the response. I met Stevenson at a political rally in Cook County during the 1952 election, when I was about four years old. My sole memories of the event were that it was held in a county forest preserve picnic area, and that his receding hairline matched my father's. I guess that's what's important to a four-year-old. -------------------------- Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats. -- H L Mencken I always prefer reality when I can figure out what it is. -- JALLEN 10/18/18
